radio device that emits a signal only heard by animals.â
Asuka rubs her chin. âSo the signal has been controlling them and making them act differently?â
I nod.
Jay turns to me. âI think we owe you an apology, Leigh. We shouldâve believed you from the start.â
I smile. âThatâs okay. The important thing is that we rescue all the animals Aunt Petunia kidnapped, and I know how we can do it. Sam, can you disable the device inside the collar?â
He closes his eyes again. Thereâs a crackle of electricity that makes the hairs on my arms stand on end. âIt is done,â he says, handing me back the collar.
âOkay, Chu, I need you to put the collar on,â I say.
Chu looks at me doubtfully, but eventually he takes the collar and puts it on. Iâm hoping as much as he is that the collar really is deactivated, and I hold my breath as he pulls it over his head.
âHow do you feel?â I ask.
âI feel like a monkey in an ugly collar,â he says. âBut otherwise Iâm okay. I guess that means the signal stopped working.â
I nod, then step up to the front gates and hit the buzzer on the intercom.
âWhat are you doing?â hisses Roger. âIf we ring the doorbell theyâll definitely know weâre here!â
âThatâs the idea,â I say. A screen switches on, and I can see a lady in a guard uniform sitting behind a desk.
âCan I help you?â she asks.
âYes, weâre the new animal catchers Aunt Petunia ordered,â I say, bluffing my way through it. âWeâve just recaptured one of the animals that escaped. We put a collar on him and now heâsunder our control again.â I hold Chu up for her to see.
She takes a good look at him before nodding. âGood. We canât let any of the animal experiments escape in case they go back to their owners and somebody figures out whatâs going on in here.â The gates buzz and then start to open. âCome on in.â
We all file through the gates, which clang shut behind us.
âGood thinking, Leigh,â whispers Jay.
âYeah, I guess all that acting practice really paid off,â I say.
We follow a long, winding driveway towards some sheds in the distance. I can hear a low, murmuring sound coming from the sheds. At first I canât make out what it is, but as we get closer to the sheds, I realise itâs the sound of voices chanting all at the same time.
âCan anyone else hear that?â I ask.
âHear what?â asks Roger.
âIâll take that as a no.â
âI can hear it,â says Chu. âItâs animals, all different kinds.â
âWhat are they saying?â
Chu shakes his head. âI donât know. Itâs too faint.â
We sneak closer to the sheds and it becomes clear what the animals are saying:
âWe must obey Aunt Petunia! We must obey Aunt Petunia! We must obey Aunt Petunia!â
âThe animals are in those sheds and theyâre being brainwashed!â I tell the others. âWe have got to do something!â
We run into the shed and what I see there makes me feel sick. Hundreds of animals of all different kinds are being held prisoner in cages. I see dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and even snakes, all wearing Aunt Petuniaâs collars and chanting in time with each other.
âWE MUST OBEY AUNT PETUNIA!â
âAhhh, look at my precious ones,â says a voice that I instantly recognise as Aunt Petuniaâs. We all spin around, ready to confront her and end her evil scheme, but then we discover that her voice is coming from a huge screen at one end of the shed.
âItâs just a recording,â says Asuka.
âPay attention, you mangy animals!â screeches the recording. All of the animals obediently turn and watch the screen, and the chanting stops. âNow that you have your collars on, you will obey my every
