now looked like she was going to be dirty, too.
âDonât worry, darling, Iâll give you a bed bath,â said Jake, winking cheekily at the doctor.
The doctor openly laughed, waving cheerily over his shoulder as he made his way to the next patient on his list.
âI canât believe youâre laughing at me,â said Eleanor grumpily.
âOh, come on, Ella. Itâs funny, you have to admit it.â
âI donât see how embarrassing yourself in front of the new boss is the least bit amusing. He pulled a piece of china out of my butt, for Christâs sake!â
âDid he cop a free feel while he was there?â
âNo!â
âShame. Still, maybe he doesnât like women.â
âYouâre seeing someone, Jake, remember?â
âOf course I am, sweetie, but Danny would never begrudge me a little fantasy here and there.â
Eleanor rolled her eyes.
âI donât think heâs gay anyway, so thereâs no point arguing over it.â
âNot even a little twitch on your gaydar?â he asked hopefully.
âNary a quiver.â
âAny quivering anywhere else?â
âNo!â
âHeâs a handsome guy. Single, too ⦠â
âJake, donât even think about it. And how do you know heâs single, anyway?â
âHoney, half the staff knows his vital statistics, and probably what he had for breakfast, too. His relationship status was one of the first things to circulate.â
âSusie,â she said dryly.
âWho else? That womanâs worth her weight in gold.â
They continued to chatter all the way back to Eleanorâs house. Eleanor lived on the outskirts of the city center, in Splott. Her grandmother had left her the little house on Jewel Street several years ago, and Eleanor loved it there. It was a two up, two down terraced house, and both of her neighbors had been good friends with her grandmother. The area was quiet to the point of silent, and there was a handy row of various shops just around the corner. Jake and Danny were always trying to get her to move to a flat in the city center, but although it would be far more convenient, Eleanor refused to budge.
âI suppose youâll be visited by the Granny Patrol as soon as they realize that youâre home early,â said Jake, smirking slightly as he helped Eleanor through her front door.
âDonât be a bitch, Jake,â she chided, swatting his hands away. âAnd you donât have to hold on to me, you know. Itâs my butt thatâs injured, not my legs.â
Jake pinched her uninjured bottom cheek and pushed her into the living room.
âQuit moaning and have a seat,â he said, throwing a pile of cushions onto her sofa. âThere, that should do you.â
Eleanor winced as she gingerly sat down. Muse tiptoed around her feet, sniffing around suspiciously before jumping onto her lap.
âMeow.â
âHello to you, too,â murmured Eleanor, rubbing the cat affectionately.
âTea or coffee?â called Jake from the kitchen.
âVodka,â replied Eleanor. âAnd plenty of it.â
Jake reappeared with a grin, holding a bottle of vodka and two glasses.
âYou know me so well,â said Eleanor with a smile.
âStraight?â
âThereâs some lemonade in the fridge, I think. Itâs a bit early to indulge it straight up.â
âRight.â
Several glasses of vodka later, Eleanor was feeling a lot better, and was even beginning to see the funny side of things.
âOf course, itâs all your fault,â she said, pointing a finger at Jakeâs somewhat blurry-looking chest. âI thought it was you, not Charming.â
âWhat made you think it was me?â
âI was facing a dreamy pair of thighs ⦠â
âYou think I have dreamy thighs?â snorted Jake.
âWell, of course you do! Not to mention a cute
