father in a flurry. At the stables he had been told that Lord Hornsby had been taken away in an ambulance. At first heâd thought there was some mistake because it was likely Harrison whoâd needed treatment and care, and apparently heâd been in the ambulance, too. But then heâd been given vague details about his employer having fallen and been knocked unconscious.
âWhereâve you been, Lara?â Walter asked his daughter as soon as she came inside.
âAt the hospital,â Lara said.
Walter blinked in astonishment. âWhy?â
âI wanted to see if Lord Hornsby was all right.â
Walter did not understand. âWhy?â he asked again.
âI was there when...â Lara began. She searched for the right words to explain what had happened.
Walter groaned. âDonât tell me you had something to do with this, Lara.â
âIt wasnât my fault...â
âWhat do you mean? I told you to keep away from the stables,â Walter said irritably.
Before Lara could further explain, there was an insistent knock on the door. Walter opened it to find two constables.
âIâm Sergeant Andrews,â the elder of the two said. âAnd this is Constable Formby, sir. I believe a Miss Lara Penrose lives at this address.â
âShe does,â Walter said.
âAnd you would be...â
âIâm Laraâs father, Walter Penrose.â
âIs Miss Penrose at home, sir?â
âYes...â
âWe would like to speak with her, sir.â
âOf course, but whatâs this about?â Walter asked in concern.
Hearing her name, Lara came forward. âIâm Miss Penrose,â she said. âCan I help you?â She suspected they had come to question her about what had happened at the polo ground.
Sergeant Andrews took her by the arm. âYou are under arrest, Miss Penrose,â he said.
âArrest!â Walter gasped. âWhat for?â
âFor assaulting Lord Hornsby.â
âI didnât assault him,â Lara cried insistently. âYou can ask him.â
âLord Hornsby says you did, Miss Penrose.â
Lara paled and her knees went weak. âThere must be a mistake,â she said. âHe wouldnât have said that because itâs not true.â
âI suggest you get a lawyer for your daughter, sir,â the sergeant said to Walter as they marched Lara away.
âWhat? Where are you taking her?â
âTo the police station on Vicarage Road, sir. Sheâll be formally charged there.â
âDad, this is a mistake,â Lara called over her shoulder.
CHAPTER TWO
If the situation had felt alarming at the time of her âarrestâ, the prospect of being bundled into the police station at Newmarket officially turned it into a nightmare!
âThis is ridiculous,â Lara yelled almost hysterically as Sergeant Andrews and Constable Formby physically escorted her through the police station doors like a common criminal. By now her composure had completely deserted her. If not for her stubborn pride, she mightâve dropped to her knees and begged them to let her go.
Lara had been pleading her case with the two police officers since the moment theyâd taken her from her home. She was becoming really frustrated and upset that they wouldnât even try to see her side of the story, let alone show her empathy.
âSurely you canât possibly believe I assaulted Lord Hornsby,â Lara cried. âHeâs a former military officer with combat training! Iâm a woman â a petite one at that! You have to see that it just doesnât make sense.â
âObviously you took him by surprise and he didnât see it coming,â Constable Formby commented with a smirk. He immediately received a reprimanding glare from his superior, whoâd told him more than once that he had to be seen to be impartial.
Lara blinked in surprise.
