Instead, I get up and head to my room. Maybe if I catch some rays by the pool, I’ll get this uneasiness out of my system.
Once I have my bikini on and iPod in hand, I head to my pool. This is the main reason I decided to move to Southern California. It’s always sunny, and never gets below seventy degrees. I grew up in a small town in Mississippi. I sometimes miss my hometown, but I can’t leave my new home. I get into my favorite chair and turn on my iPod. It doesn’t take long for the music to soothe me to sleep and I have wild vivid dreams of Isaac and Conner, dreams I would never dare tell anyone.

I don’t hear from Isaac for another three weeks. I must say, I’ve had my fair share of one night stands, but his hurt. I can’t believe I thought he was different, and like any other guy they run when they see a good thing coming. I kept myself busy with work these past weeks. Thinking about that night with Isaac was just too painful right now for me to relive. To make things worse, Cammie would not take the hint that I didn’t want to see her anymore. I was starting to get pissed off. It just wasn’t like her to be so clingy. I know I will have to eventually sit down and tell her why I left and haven’t come back.
I sigh and shut down my computer at my desk. I look around my office and realize how alone I am. I try and call Karen to take my mind off depressing thoughts, but she doesn’t answer. I figure she’s working hard again.
I make my way to the living room to catch up on some TV shows. Surely that will keep my mind busy. Just as I sit down, I hear my doorbell. I quickly get up to see who is at my door so late. I open the door and I am shocked to see Isaac standing there with his hands in his hair. He looks really shaggy. He hasn’t shaved in a while, and is in desperate need of a haircut.
For a second I am happy to finally see him again, but as soon as that second is gone I’m filled with anger and hurt. “What the hell are you doing here, Isaac?” I ask him.
He finally looks up at me, and I see he is hurting as well. How can he look so worn down in just three weeks? “Riley, I……” Isaac stumbles. “Look, I know what I did was wrong. I never had any intentions of running like I did.”
I am so confused at this point. All I can do is stare at him and I know he knows I’m not buying this sap apology.
“Can I please come in so I can explain better?” Isaac asks.
It takes me a few moments before I let him come in. He walks into the living room and sits down. His elbows are bent to his knees, and he takes a deep breath, like he is trying to find his composure.
“I don’t understand why you’re here, Isaac, so I suggest you get to the point. Fast.” I am losing the little patience I have with him. How dare he do this? I haven’t seen or heard from him in three weeks, and he thinks I will just cave like some teenager when he comes crawling back?
Isaac can tell I’m not in the mood for lame excuses. When he finally starts talking, I am shocked at what he tells me. “Riley, I had to leave the country for a while. That’s why I’ve been gone and why you haven’t heard from me. There are some things that have happened in my past that I cannot change, and I thought those demons were buried there. My partner and I just got back tonight and I had to come by to see you.”
He gets up and starts walking toward me. “I haven’t stopped thinking about you since that night we spent together. I meant what I said when I told you I had never felt this way about a woman before. If you will let me, I want to make it up to you.”
His explanation sounds too good to be true. I ask, “Are you in some sort of trouble with the law? Because I’m not interested in having a relationship with a felon.” God this is not what I need. I can’t be with someone who is in trouble with the law.
“I’m not a felon, Riley. You just have to trust me on that. And I can’t tell you about my
