wait until you come back,” I whined over the line. “I just had an argument with the boss because Jason called. What the hell? I know they allow personal calls here. The one lady with the four kids gets calls from the babysitter and her husband at least twice a day.” I’d been nothing but a model employee to the jackass ogre, but he acted like I was the queen of the slackers. Well, actually not all the time, only when I got a call or gift from Jason.
“Sweetheart, it has only been two weeks since I left. He couldn’t really be that bad. Can he?” she argues.
“Aunt, everything I do seems to piss him off. I spend hours after work working harder than I should, only for him to act like my work is just okay. He has been avoiding me often these last few days, deciding that I’m not needed at his meetings. And just this morning, he took his VP’s assistant to a meeting to take notes instead of me, even though I had nothing to do.”
“You need to just stick it out. It will be great for your résumé.” After we hung up, I took a shower, then headed off to bed. It was Friday night, and I could be out with Stacy, but nope, I choose to stay in. I was just too tired. I’d worked about sixty hours this week and mostly alone because he gave me an extra project.
I could swear he punished me for having a conversation with Chad, the resident software engineer. He sent me down while he was out of the office to get the specks from engineering and walked in on us while Chad asked me out to dinner. After that, all my projects were tedious and solo ones, the damn ogre.

“Madeline, that girl is driving me crazy. Tell me your cruise is ending early.” I was pissed. It was going on the third week, and I hardly gotten anything done. The girl was in my thoughts all the time. And if that fuck of a boyfriend didn’t stop with the calls and gifts, I was going to go ape shit crazy.
“Michael, why don’t you just tell her you love her and get it over with? You’ve been talking about her since my party six months ago and yet here you are—still not together. I want to see both of you happy. I know that you have been going through a lot with the whole theft and your father’s injury, but you have her there.”
“She is still with that jackass and…she hates me,” I admitted in defeat.
“Sarah isn’t dating anyone right now,” Madeline laughed
“What?!” I shouted. I wasn’t trying to make my move because she had a boyfriend that she obviously wanted to be with. All this waiting for nothing…she was single.
“Damn, Michael, I would like to keep my hearing in my golden years. I thought you knew,” she said.
“How the fuck would I know, Madeline? He sends her gifts every other day and the fuck calls her so damn often,” I snarled.
“They broke up about three months ago. Maybe he is trying to get her back,” she offered.
“She just hates me then because she hasn’t said anything about them not being together. Not to mention, I came to her desk and she had her last day circled with a heart and smiley face.” When I’d seen that shit, I wanted to rip the calendar off her desk and let her have it. Just thinking about it pissed me off.
“No, I don’t think she does. You just have a tendency to piss her off. Normally, Sarah is very sweet. You seem to bring out the bad girl in her.” I heard her chuckle on the other end, and then I understood her innuendo. Sarah being a bad girl for me did have some merit. If I could only get her to like me long enough for me to seduce her.
“Fine, I need a game plan,” I conceded.
“Good luck, and maybe you should stop taking Gary’s assistant with you to meetings.”
“It was once, and that was because that bad girl of ours decided to wear the shortest skirt possible and a low cut blouse under her suit jacket. Do you think I was going to allow a whole room full of the all-single engineering male staff members to ogle her?”
    “Try
