he’d met the Luna; she loved the fact that he was an eagle, and since moving here had chased him around every chance she got asking questions about his kind.
“Cami,” Shane said quietly. “Do your mates know where you are?” She looked at him and smiled. “Of course not, but Jo and Trinity are watching my back, so you can relax. See,” she said and pointed to the porch which held the other two Council members in their shifted forms. Jo was a rare White Wolf and looked mystical in her wolf form. Trinity, also a wolf, was smaller; he had no problem seeing all the animal symbols that ran over her coat with his keen eagle vision. He smiled when a tiger appeared around the corner with a roar, busted! Trinity’s mate, Blaze, had found her and he was not happy with her for being out in the open.
Cami laughed when the smaller wolf growled, turned her back on Blaze, lifting her tail and swishing it across his tiger’s face. She was taunting her mate. Cami loved how the once quiet and demure female had come into her own in the last few weeks. Their mates were all overprotective and at times overbearing. Cami turned to Shane and grinned.
“See, now Blaze is here. By the way, have you been watching like I asked you too?” She asked and Shane nodded.
“Of course, Cami, but there have been no other signs of dissention in the Pack. In fact, just the opposite. Everyone is pretty well pissed at Michael; I would hate to be that guy right about now. He’s staying in town, and no one will go near him. All of his friends have shunned him and as far as I know, he’s had no visitors, and no one to stand up for him at the challenge. Another part of it is, they are confused and no one can imagine why he would challenge an obviously superior wolf. He’s a gamma, not even beta material, and yet he challenged an Alpha,” Shane said and rubbed the back of his neck.
When a formal challenge was made to an Alpha, protocol was always followed. Each of the parties had a second; the second’s role was to watch for cheating. Someone who would stand in for them and be their back up if things went wrong, though more of a show of support than an actual back up. In Pack law, if the Alpha loses, then he is removed from his role as Alpha. Most challenges were over females or silly arguments; an Alpha challenge is much more formal. It was all very civilized, well all except for the fight to the death thing and the blood and gore that always accompanied a challenge.
But no one had stood up for Michael. He was on his own in the challenge. This meant that if he lost, Quin must kill him.
Cami was convinced that something else was going on, why would a low level wolf challenge an Alpha as powerful as Quin? It did not make sense. Cami had voiced her opinions to the Council, all had agreed, however the men had to concentrate on the fight. The females on the other hand worked the danger they could not see. The bad part was that no one really knew what Braden was after. So Cami paced, growled, and yelled. Everyone in the compound was aware of the little Alpha female.
Cami turned to him and smiled, Shane felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.
He hated it when she smiled like that, it meant that he was going to have to do something stupid and his Alphas would yell at him once again for being involved with one of her schemes. The last one had landed him in hot water. Cloe had been craving Mexican food from a place in Denver. They conned Shane into driving them all there in the Pack van, claiming that Darien and Teagan had okayed the outing with Quin. When he returned, he and the females had been met by severely pissed off mates.
“Shane?” Cami smiled.
Shane rolled his eyes and said, “Yes, Luna?” He knew that he was going to get in trouble for this.
“Could you please do me a favor? Do you see the wolf standing over there? He has the log in sheets for the upcoming challenge, everyone that is expected to be there. Could you go and get
