Awoman’sflawislessaboutherpastandismoreaboutunmetgoalsandthingsshewantsto accomplishandcan’torwon’t.It’softenbasedonperceivedfearsofthefutureandsomethingthat could happen.
Forexample,ifawomanisafraidoffailureintheworkplace,shemightbecomedriven,even exacting.
Whatifherflawisimpatience?Shecouldbeafraidthataprojectsheisworkingonwon’tget finished,andthathercoworkerwillstealitfromher(becausesheisasinglemotherandshehasto dividehertimeathomeandtheoffice).Maybeshedoesn’ttrustbecauseshethinksshecanonly depend onherself.
Thisiswhyflawsandfearsgotogether.Yes,thefear can bebasedonsomethinginthepastthat happenedtothem,butmorelikelyitissomethingthey’veseenfromothers,orread,orsimply believeaboutthemselves.Whateveritis,womenhaveagreatcapacitytodreamupfearsandthenlet themruletheirlives.Yes,theyneedtoberealistic,butreadingaboutchildabductioninthe newspaperisenoughtomakeawomanlockherchildinthehouseuntilhe’seighteen.
So,forawoman’sflaw,ithelpstohavetolookforward(whileforaman’sflawlookingbackwardis thebesttool)andseeifshe’safraidofsomethingthat will happen.
Or…perhapsitissomethingthatshewants,thatshefears won’t happen.Fromthemomentmy husbandaskedmetomarryhimtothefinalstepdowntheaisle,Ithoughtsomethingterriblemight happentohim.Ifearedlosinghim.SoIbecameclingyandobsessedanddownrightscary.Andhe still marriedme!

Asyou’recreatingyourheroine,ask: What is your biggest flaw?
Then ask: Why? What fear drives this flaw?
It’sthisfearthatwillcreatesympathyinyourreaderandperhapsevenmakethereaderseeherselfin yourheroineandovercomeherownfears.
Note: You can weave together the fearsof both the hero and the heroine andcause an event that triggersboththeirfears.Forexample,awomanmightbeafraidthathermanwillleaveher,anda heromightfearthatawomanwillrejecthimorwon’tfollowhim.So,havingsomethinghappen whereheleavesherandshedoesn’tfollowhimisonewaytotriggerbothfears.Ialwayslookat theirfearsseparately,andthentryandfindonemomentwheretheycouldcometruesimultaneously. Like,whenawomanfearsforaman’ssafety,sosheleaveshimsohewon’tbeinjured.However, he’safraidthatifsheneedshim,hewon’tbethere.Therefore,they’rebothtryingtohelpeachother, whichleadstosomefabulousinternalobstacles!
