acoustics, including the custom-paneled walls, giving the music a distinctive resonance.
They listened to a wide range of songs, everything from Death Cab for Cutie and Foo Fighters to Coldplay. With Jacob next to her, Vivienne felt like a teenager rocking out to popular tunes. They had the volume way up, and swayed with the rhythm or tapped their feet. Lost in the deep bass and fast beats, the hours slipped by without notice.
When Jacob finally turned off the music, the quiet of the room was dramatic. “I think I’m deaf,” Vivienne said. “But that was fan-tas-tic.”
Jacob reached for her hand. “Let’s go out for a walk and get some air.”
“Sounds good to me.” Vivienne leaned against his shoulder. “The brisk air will wake me up. Otherwise, you’ll have to put me down for a nap.”
Jacob laughed. “I don’t think you’d get much sleep.”
“I wasn’t planning on it.” She batted her eyelashes, hoping to tempt him, but Jacob just kissed her cheek.
Vivienne grabbed a jacket and they took the elevator to street level. The freshness of the day inspired her. “I feel like I could walk the whole length of Manhattan.”
    “But could you walk back?”
“Absolutely not.” Vivienne laughed, and Jacob joined in. She was a good walker, but not that good.
They didn’t make the thirty-two-mile trek around the island, but they did make it to Times Square. Adorned with billboards and advertisements, it wasn’t exactly a nature walk, but Vivienne found the buzz of Midtown exciting.
The area was also the hub of the theater district, a major center of the world’s entertainment industry. There was no way to be there without feeling the thrill. Jacob stopped at a food stand and bought empanadas, which they ate as they walked. The tasty treat was reminiscent of their trip to Argentina.
They walked until they tired of it, then returned to the penthouse. Jacob rummaged in his wine cellar to choose a bottle for the evening. “I’m looking for a special vintage.”
Vivienne followed as he walked through the room filled with racks of wine. They all looked special to her, but he seemed to be looking for one in particular.
“Ah, here it is.” Jacob pulled out an elegant bottle of wine. “This is a 2008 Bordeaux from the Médoc region.” He held it up so she could see. “This vintage wasn’t of the ultra-ripe, fruity persuasion, but more medium-bodied…great acidity, as I recall. I think you’ll like it.”
From the way he was lovingly cradling it, Vivienne was sure she would like it. She only drank expensive bottles with Jacob, but had grown accustomed to it. It was yet another way that he had spoiled her. If she went out with friends, she was forced to order a cocktail, knowing that whatever wine would measure up to her new standards would be out of her price range.
Before leaving the wine cellar, Jacob opened the bottle, and Vivienne selected two crystal glasses from the shelf. “Let’s drink out on the terrace.” She followed him out, and they sat in the light of the late afternoon sun to enjoy the red wine.
Vivienne took her shoes off and put her feet on Jacob’s thigh, feeling his lean muscle under his jeans. She sipped her wine. “This is delicious. You were right.”
“Yes, it’s held up well. It’s one we imported, and I put away a couple of bottles.”
The view of Manhattan was breathtaking. Vivienne didn’t seem to tire of it, and it was spectacular from so high up. She enjoyed her wine and the solitude with Jacob. Yet the atmosphere wasn’t tranquil at all.
There was too much sexual tension for that. Throughout the day, Vivienne’s desire for Jacob had escalated. Each innocuous activity, not usually prone to stir arousal, did so. Whether she was cooking his breakfast, rocking out to loud music, or strolling through the streets of the city, Vivienne was acutely aware of Jacob’s sexuality.
His presence made her blood heat and her skin tingle, even if they were doing nothing
