PLCâs Cupcake of the Week: âThereâs No Business like Snow Business.â The girls gathered at Sadieâs house to bake, decorate, and box the orders so her brothers could deliver them.
âI am totally going to fail my math quiz Friday,â Sadie sighed. âWith all of this baking, how will I study?â
âWeâll bake and study,â Kylie insisted.
Jenna held up her hands, which were covered in flour and buttercream. âUm, I wouldnât bring any math textbooks in this kitchen at the moment. Itâs a mess!â
âYou see?â Sadie said. âItâs hopeless.â
âRelax and focus on cupcake math,â Kylie insisted.
Lexi giggled. âNow that would be a cool subject in school! Do you get to frost as you do your fractions?â
Kylie continued: âSadie, we have a total of 216 cupcakes to bake and have four dozen already in the oven. How many do we have left to bake?â
Sadie thought hard and tried to picture the equation in her head. âWell, 4 times 12 equals 48,â she began. âSo 216 minus 48 would be 168.â
Kylie applauded. âAnd how many dozen is that? Write an equation and solve!â
Sadie closed her eyes and saw cupcakes lined up on a countertop. She pictured them in groups of 12. The equation would be: 168 divided by 12 equals x . So x would be 14.
âWe have 14 dozen left to go!â Sadie answered.
â Muy bueno !â Jenna cheered. âYou are so going to pass that quiz Friday!â
A few flakes started falling outside the window just as the girls were putting the cupcakes in the oven. But by the time the last dozen were piped with white chocolate frosting and dipped in shredded coconut, the winds were whipping up and the ground was covered by a white blanket of snow.
âI thought they didnât say snow âtil Thursday night,â Lexi said, peering outside.
âThatâs weathermen for you,â Mrs. Harris sighed. âI guess they were off by a day.â She looked concerned. âNow your father is going to have to stop working on the Saperstonesâ garage door. Itâs getting bad out there quickly.â
Kylie peered out the window. âI donât think I can bike home in thisâ¦â
Mrs. Harris nodded. âI think you should all call your parents and tell them youâll be sleeping over here tonight. Weâll see how bad it is in the morning.â
Kylie, Jenna, and Lexi cheered: âSlumber party!â
âBetter not let my brothers hear thatâ¦â Sadie warned. She knew Corey and Tyler would be up to all sorts of tricks if they heard her friends were staying over.
But it was too late. âI smell something goodâ¦Hand it over!â Corey demanded. He bounded into the kitchen, tracking snow across the floor, and dropped his dripping wet jacket over the back of a chair.
âSay please ,â Mrs. Harris corrected him.
âOkay⦠please hand it over,â Corey joked.
Jenna offered him a cupcake, and he inhaled it in two bites. âWould you like to know what you just ate?â she asked.
âNope. Just give me another oneâ¦â He licked his lips. âOr I will torture you guys all night with practical jokes. Did I ever tell you about the itching powder I put in Sadieâs sleeping bag when she was eight?â
The girls looked at Sadie for confirmation. âGive him another cupcake,â she said. âI itched for days.â
âI hope the snow doesnât shut down all the roads,â Kylie suddenly thought. âHow will we get all these cupcakes delivered?â
âDogsled?â Corey teased, helping himself to a third cupcake. âMush! Mush!â
âNahâ¦reindeer are better,â called a voice from the living room. âOn Donner, on Blitzenâ¦â Sadieâs brother Tyler appeared in the kitchen, covered in snow. âItâs really coming down out
