pages.â
âFrom what?â Scottâs eyes were wide as he asked the question. âTell us, Angela!â
âFrom my murder mystery! The one Iâm going to write while Iâm here.â
Ryan was the first one to catch on, and he laughed so hard, he doubled over. âThat was great, Angela! You got us!â
âI know I did.â Angela grinned and then everyone started to laugh. Everyone except Eve. Eve just sighed and rolled her eyes.
âActually, part of that was true.â Angela smiled at everyone. âI did go to Madame Jolletteâs Academy. It was in the Alps, but it was a regular boarding school. I was just demonstrating a point about writing.â
âWhatâs that?â
Ryan was all ears.
âStart with something you know and take off from there. Itâs called the âWilling Suspension of Disbelief. ââ
âI get it!â Ryan looked very excited. âIf you write about what you know, it has the ring of truth. And then, when you start branching out, your readers will go right along with you.â
Angela gave Ryan a thumbs-up signal. âExactly! Thatâs why Iâm setting my murder mystery right here.â
âHere?â Cheryl was fascinated. âYou mean right here, in the Sutler Mansion?â
âThatâs right. If Scottâs sources are right and itâs really haunted, it should make a good setting. And I think Iâll use all of you as characters . . . unless you donât want me to.â
âYou can use me.â Tracie looked very excited. âIâd love to be a character in your book, Angela.â
âMe, too.â Ryan grinned. And then everyone else chimed in, telling Angela how great it would be if she used them as characters in her book.
Eve was silent. She had a very bad feeling about being a character in Angelaâs book. It was almost like tempting fate, especially since Angela was writing a murder mystery.
âHow about you, Eve?â Angela asked. âDo you mind?â
Eve winced. She didnât want to say that she had a bad feeling about this whole thing. Theyâd be sure to tease her about being superstitious. So she just shrugged âOkay. I guess itâs all right with me, too.â
âGreat!â Angela started to smile again. âSince thereâs ten of us, I think Iâll pattern my book after And Then There Were None . Youâve all read it, havenât you?â
Eve shivered. Sheâd read And Then There Were None when she was in high school, and it had frightened her. She didnât want to be a character in a novel where everyone got killed one by one.
âI havenât read it, but Iâve seen the movie,â Ryan spoke up. âItâs one of my favorites.â
âIâve never seen it,â Scott said. âMaybe we should rent it and watch it together.â
âThatâs a great idea!â Angela beamed at Scott. âWe could watch it tonight, after we read our pages.â
âIâll get started making some snacks,â Cheryl said. âI want to try out a couple of recipes for my cookbook. My grandmother used to make wonderful caramel corn, and she had a great recipe for peanut butter fudge.â
âCut it out, Cheryl. Youâre making me hungry.â Marc groaned. âIs anyone else hungry?â
Everyone nodded, and Angela spoke up. âDoes everybody like take-out Chinese?â
âMy favorite!â Tracie sighed. âI just love egg rolls! And the fortune cookies are so much fun. The last time I went out for Chinese, my fortune said I was going to be lucky in love.â
Angela laughed. âIâm sure you will be, Tracie. Iâll treat you all to an early dinner.â
âIâll come with you,â Ryan volunteered. âYouâll need help carrying all those cartons.â
Angela turned to smile at Ryan. âThanks. The rest of you can start
