and now she stood a few feet behind Eva, staring at Sandy and Cherise. She watched them for another second, then slowly turned to Eva.
Leslieâs eyes were shining again, but not with tears. This time, they shone with glee.
âThis will
kill
Tania!â Leslie declared triumphantly.
chapter 6
Â
A fter school the next afternoon, Eva stood near the bleachers at the football stadium, watching Tania and Sandy argue with each other.
Tania looks angrier than Iâve ever seen her, she thought. And the way Sandy keeps clenching his fists! Itâs really frightening.
A sudden gust of wind blew a strand of hair across Evaâs face. Her nose itched and her eyes watered. She needed desperately to sneeze.
But if I do, theyâll notice me, she thought. And who knows what might happen then?
âCome on, Tania.â Sandyâs voice sounded impatient. âI donât have a clue what youâre talking about.â
âGive me a break!â Tania cried. âYou knowexactly what Iâm talking about. Do me a favor and stop pretending you donât.â
âIâm not pretending!â Sandy took a deep breath and shoved his fists into the pockets of his jeans. âI donât feel like playing guessing games, Tania. Why donât you just tell me whatâs going on?â
Ha, Eva thought. As if you donât know.
Taniaâs green eyes narrowed to slits. âOkay, Sandy, Iâll tell you. I found out the truth. I found out that youâve been sneaking around on me.â
Sandy frowned in confusion. âWhat?â
âSeeing somebody else,â Tania snapped. âThatâs what sneaking around means, Sandy. Youâve been seeing somebody elseâbehind my back!â
âNo.â His fists came out of his pockets and he reared back, looking outraged. âThatâs a lie!â
âItâs true!â she shouted. âI saw you! And I have friends, Sandy. They saw you, too.â
âItâs a lie,â he repeated, shaking his head furiously. âI donât care what you and your friends
think
you saw!â
âOh, please!â Tania rolled her eyes.
âIâm
not
seeing anybody else, Tania. You and your friends are totally wrong.â
Tania crossed her arms and gazed at him furiously.
Sandy stared back at her, a scowl on his face.
Eva watched them, not daring to move. Whatâs going to happen? she wondered.
Finally, Tania sighed. âLook, this is crazy.â
âYou got that right,â Sandy agreed quickly. He stepped toward her, his arms out as if to hug her.
âNo.â Tania moved back, shaking her head. âI mean itâs crazy to keep arguing. I know what I saw. And so do my friends.â
She took a long breath. Her green eyes seemed to fill with tears. âItâs over, Sandy.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âYou want me to spell it out?â she asked. âOkayâIâm breaking up with you. Itâs over. Get it now?â
âYou canât!â Sandyâs voice rose. His fingers squeezed into fists again. âYou canât break up with me. Not before the Homecoming Dance.â
âYou should have thought of that
before
you decided to fool around with somebody else,â Tania told him. âIâm the Homecoming Queen, remember? Iâm not going to that dance and look like a fool. If you want to go so much, then why donât you take your
new
girlfriend?â
âIâm telling youâitâs a lie!â he insisted.
âGive it a rest, Sandy!â she snapped. âEveryone in school knows the truth about you!â
âYou canât do this!â
âGuess what? I just did!â Tania swept her hair out of her eyes and started to stalk away.
Sandy grabbed her arm and spun her around to face him. âYou think you can break up and then walk away from me, just like that?â he asked
