admirer?”
    I
shrugged, feeling helplessly girly as I set the flowers on the floor to read
the card. No one had ever sent me flowers. To get an unexpected treat like this
was, needless to say, shocking.
    I
pulled out the card as Karolyn bent forward to smell the lovely fragrance of
one of the blooms. My heart skipped a beat even before I read what the card
said.

Each rose is for a week I’ve gone without you. I
hope to see you tonight and perhaps, pick up where we left off. I never thought
it possible, but I miss you, Cupcake. Meet me on the dance floor for the first
song, the first dance.
    —J

    My
heart thumped wildly when I spotted one single word: Cupcake. I scanned the note again, reading it word for word
before I truly understood what he was saying.
    Jake
would be here. Jake wanted to see me again.
    Perhaps,
in the back of my mind, I’d dressed up for him. There was no guarantee that
Jake would be at the dinner tonight but I had wanted to look my best. Just in
case. And now he was here. And he wanted me. And oh, how I wanted him.
    “Earth
to Ashlyn.” Karolyn waved her hands in front of my face before snapping her
fingers to get my attention. I blinked once, finally focusing on her.
    “Who’s
the note from that it made you go all bleary-eyed?” she asked.
    I
smiled, lifting the roses to my nose and began walking towards my office. “No
one you know.”
    Not
totally true, since every living, breathing woman knew a hottie when one was
around. Jake dominated the air space around him, and every woman in the room
felt his presence. And I had missed that presence more than I had possibly
known.
    I
slipped inside my office, situating the vase on my desk. My panties were
already soaked and, glancing back to see Karolyn wasn’t around, I slipped them
from my body, tucking them into my desk drawer. The hem of my dress fell to
mid-thigh and was a rayon-like fabric. No doubt every curve of my body was
accentuated.
    I
meet Karolyn in the hall and, together, we took her car to the convention center.
The first dance started fifteen minutes after seven, and I had two minutes to
spare upon entering the ballroom.
    I
scanned the crowd but saw no Jake. Where could he possibly be?
    “Ash,
you okay?” Karolyn asked, giving me a questioning glance.
    “Super.
I’m going to get something to drink.” I headed to the bar in the far corner and
requested a glass of champagne.
    The
bartender handed me the glass and I moved to the side to get a better view of
the crowd. Where could he be?
    “Party
sucks, doesn’t it?” A warm familiar voice whispered in my ear, making my
nipples hard.
    I
smiled to myself as I sipped my champagne. “Actually, I’m having a good time. I
just received a dozen roses, so I’m in a pretty damn good mood.”
    I
turned towards him and my jaw nearly dropped to the floor. Instead of the
casual denim and worn tee, the man standing before me wore a black Armani suit,
black shirt and silver tie. His hair was coated with gel and his eyes were the
deepest blue-gray I’d ever seen. Amazing how someone could change.
    “See
something you like?” He smiled, perfect white teeth shining against the dark
tan of his skin.
    It
took all of five seconds to realize he expected a reply. “Since when do you go
along with the rules? Wasn’t it just a few months ago you told me you don’t
give a fuck?”
    “Yes.
I did say that.”   His grin grew
wider. “If it’s any consolation though, I dressed up for you.”
    It
was my turn to grin. “I don’t like my men soft.”
    His
hand snaked around my waist and pulled me to him, his erection perfectly
aligned with my pelvis. He pressed hard against me, making sure I got his
point. I groaned and nearly dropped my half empty glass of champagne.
    “Does
anything about me feel soft?” His mouth claimed mine, and it was a homecoming,
a long time waiting. I dropped the champagne glass, and it shattered to a
million pieces at our feet. I wanted him now and, the
