comprehensible
words. Ever so gradually, he pulled out then plunged back in.
    “Oh,
God.” I gripped the sheets, fighting against my orgasm. I wanted it to last
longer than this. I wanted to make it good. “Jake, oh, Jake!”
    He
slid a finger to the apex of my thighs and rubbed my clit. I gasped. My vision
blurred as pleasure rocked my body and I exploded. Jake pulled his hand away
and started thrusting harder and faster inside me. His face contorted as he let
out a grunt and came.
    He
collapsed beside me. We lay together on the pile of pillows and wrinkled black
satin sheets, staring at each other. I’ve never been one for recreational sex,
but I was damn glad I’d given in to Jake. Let your inhibitions go was my new
motto.
    Soon
we had dressed and climbed back onto his motorcycle. I wrapped my arms around
him, feeling his warmth in the cool, morning air. One night stands weren’t
meant to involve feelings, but I definitely loved the way Jake made me feel.
    It
wasn’t long before we were back at the convention center. My car sat alone in
the far corner of the parking lot with not a soul in sight. Jake pulled up next
to it and killed the engine. I supposed this would be our goodbye.
    I
released him, and he climbed off the Harley then stuck out a hand to help me
down. I would miss those hands on my body, I realized, squeezing a little
harder than necessary. He walked me to the driver’s side door, releasing my
hand only to rub my back with a gentle caress.
    For
some strange reason, I wanted him to kiss me. To tell me this was more than one
night, and that he’d like to see me again. That we could have sex again anytime
I wanted. It was totally hedonistic, I suppose, but I felt it.
    “So
I guess this is it?” I said, breaking the ice. “Where we part ways and pretend
this never happened?”
    He
stopped, one hand poised on my back, while the other stroked my cheeks with his
knuckles. “I guess so, Cupcake.”
    He
bent to kiss me, sliding his tongue between my parted lips. The heat from his
mouth warmed me to my core, reminding me all over again that I wouldn’t have
this mouth on me again, that I wouldn’t feel his tongue, feel his taste.
    I
kissed him until he pulled away. I opened my eyes to see two gray pools with
endless depths shining back at me. I looked away hesitantly, hoping he didn’t
read the emotions on my face. I didn’t want this to end, not really, not after
the night we’d shared. I knew then that I wasn’t a one-night-stand kind of
girl.
    “I
won’t ever forget this time with you, Cupcake.” He kissed me again, short and
sweet. “Ever.”
    I
smiled and he backed away to remount his bike. For some reason, I believed him.
Steamy-hot sex had happened only once in my life and I was bound to never
forget it. I’d never forget him.

Chapter Three

    Present day
    “So,
Ashlyn, you ready to go to the party?” Karolyn poked her head around the corner
of the employee bathroom just as I touched up my makeup.
    “Yes,
just one sec.” I applied a thin coat of pink lip gloss and smiled to myself in
the mirror. I‘d bought a new dress for this occasion, and I’d chosen a teal
blue fashion with a shorter hemline, a little more modest than the black dress
I’d worn to Cooper’s birthday party. Matching, strappy heels covered my feet,
and my hair was done in a pretty up-do with curled tendrils hanging down around
my face. “Okay, Kare, let’s go.”
    I
stepped around the corner just in time for a flower deliveryman to nearly bump
into me. I gave him my apologies, but he stopped me by saying, “Are you Ms.
Davenport?”
    Karolyn
and I stop. “Yes. Why?”
    The
man looked at the card. “These are for you.”
    He
shoved the dozen pale pink roses towards me, and I took them, wondering who
would send me such pretty flowers. When I asked, he shrugged and took off the
way he’d come.
    Karolyn
arched her perfectly plucked eyebrows at me, crossing her arms over her pert
cleavage. “Do we have an
