pay for his dinner. Frank took the money, and Henry asked, âNot on the house for me?â
âWhen you cure my wifeâs headaches in the time it takes to make a martini, Iâll tear up your bill too.â
Henry felt the heat rise up his throat. He put a hand on the bar to stop Frank. âYou seriously think her stuff works?â
âI seriously think it does, and so do most of the people in this town.â Frank looked at Henry. âWhat do you know about the Sparrow Sisters?â
âThere are three of them,â Henry said. He took a last swallow of his beer. âThatâs all.â
âThatâs true,â Frank said and let the name Marigold flit through his head. âAnd you were hiding from Patience because, what? She doesnât like you?â
That was a question; she sure didnât seem to like him. âI wasnât hiding,â Henry said. âHow long am I going to be the new guy?â he asked.
âA while,â Frank said.
Henry stepped back, preparing to leave, but Frank stopped him.
âYou should know that the Sparrow Sisters are something of a legend in Granite Point. Their family history, hell their own story, itâs as much a part of this place as the harbor.â Frank closed the register. âIâm surprised youâve seen one in your office. They arenât much for doctors after Marigold. Dr. Higgins was one thing, but the rest of the medical world, letâs just say the Sisters arenât exactly fans.â Henry faked a shudder. âI wouldnât want any of them pissed off at me.â
âIâll remember that,â Henry said. Too late, he thought as he walked out and right into Simon Mayo.
âWhoa, there,â Simon said as both men grabbed each otherâs elbows.
As Henry apologized, he gave a slight hop to take the weight off his leg. He watched Simonâs eyes travel down.
âSo, the city doctor meets the country lawyer,â Simon said as he stuck out his hand. âIâm Simon Mayo.â
âHenry Carlyle,â Henry said as he shook. âThe new guy. How do you know me?â
Simon gestured to Henryâs face and leg and smiled. âIâm afraid youâre already famous.â
âOhâ was all Henry could come up with.
âCan I buy you a beer?â Simon asked.
âIâve got work to do,â Henry replied.
âAnother house call to the Sisters?â Simonâs voice thinned, and Henry heard the shift.
âNo, Iâm finished there.â Henry shook his head. âHow does everybody know everything?â
Simon nodded and smiled again. âVery small town,â He said. âIâll let you go, then.â
Henry watched him walk into Doyleâs. The light spilling around Simonâs shoulders and the familiar greetings he got from people in the bar reminded Henry of the extent to which he was under scrutiny in Granite Point. Somehow Henry had ended up in a town with three odd sisters digging around at their nursery, making âremediesâ in a cauldron no doubt, and he was the curiosity.
Frank had slipped out from behind the bar to watch Simon and Henry through the big window. He reckoned that the new doctor had a lot to learn about the Sisters if he wanted tobelong in Granite Point. Frank understood, or at least his wife had taught him, that each sister had a life that held in its smallness all the detail of a much larger tragedy. Heâd listened to the story of the Sparrows because Claire had told it to him. If Henry seemed a bit undone by Patience, maybe it was because her story was still unwritten.

L ike their mother, the Sisters loved the soil, though it took some years after Honorâs death before any of them were willing to be around her beloved plants. But when they were ready, the Sisters made haste. First, they reclaimed Honorâs garden, tending the
