toward the door. As much as Zee liked music, she couldnât wait to get out of the room. After only one class period with Kathi, sheâd had enough of her to last a week. Mr. P seemed nice but nervous. She hoped he got over it fast.
Just as Zee took a step into the hallâCRASH!âshe slammed into another body. The two of them bounced off each other in different directions, and the girl barely missed ricocheting off a senior boy who could have been a body double for a gorilla.
âOhmylanta!â Zee declared. How could this be happening again?
The girl looked at Zee. âWhat did you say?â Her dark hair was pulled back in a long ponytail, which made her green eyes stand out.
Zee shrugged. âOh, itâs nothing. Itâs just something I say when I get nervous or surprised!â
The girl laughed. âThatâs funny! Iâm from Atlanta, Georgia. I thought maybe you knew that.â Zee had never seen the girl before, but her Southern accent definitely told Zee she was not from Brookdale. As if the girl could read Zeeâs mind, she said, âBut that would be totally weird since you donât know me.â She paused. âIâm Chloe. Iâm sorry I ran into you.â
âIt was so not your fault,â Zee said. âI think aliens abducted me last night and turned me into a human-size piece of metal. It turns out the rest of the world are magnets.â
âMaybe you just have a magnetic personality!â Chloe suggested with a smile. âDid the aliens name you?â
Zee nodded. âMackenzie. You can call me Zee. Everyone doesâexcept teachers. And sometimes my parents. And their friends.â
âWow! Thatâs a lot of information.â
âToo much?â Zee asked.
âA teeny bit.â Chloe laughed. âYouâre not the only one having a bad day. It took me forever to get my schedule figured out, and then I went to the wrong classroom. I sat in photography for fifteen minutes before I figured out my mistake. Now I have to find another class.â
âWhat class did you miss?â asked Zee.
âMusic,â Chloe replied.
âOh, I was in that class! Youâre Chloe Lawrence-Johnson! What do you have second period?â Zee asked.
Chloe looked at her schedule. âEnglish.â
âMe, too. Letâs look for it together.â
âMaybe weâll find it twice as fast,â Chloe said.
Zee rolled her eyes. âOr get twice as lost.â The girls started walking.
Behind her, Zee heard someone clear his throat. She looked up. Oops! Jasper. âSorry,â Zee said. Sometimes he was soooo quietâespecially around girlsâthat it was easy to forget he was even there.
Zee introduced her two newest friends to each other. âHi,â Jasper said quickly. âMaths class is in the other direction. Iâll meet up with you at lunch.â He started to walk away, then added, âTry not to forget about meâplease.â
âI wonât!â Zee promised.
The girls began to search for their English room. âI likeyour bag,â Zee told Chloe as they wove in and out of the other students. The body was a diamond pattern with black, green, and red squares. âWhere did you get it?â
âI made it.â
âYou made it? Cool beans!â
âI couldnât find anything I liked in the store. I wish Iâd seen yours.â
Zee laughed. âI didnât buy it like this,â she said. âIt was plain, so I decorated it.â
âOh, my gosh! It looks better than the ones in the boutiques in Los Angeles. Can I look at it?â
Zee slipped it off her shoulder. âIf I can see yours?â
The girls swapped bags. Zee couldnât believe how great Chloeâs looked. âThis would cost over two hundred dollars in a store.â
Chloe looked down at herself. âNext Iâm gonna try to do something about this uniform.â
