stealing your stuff, or worse.â She looked around. âIf you prefer this place, Iâll bring you back. I swear it on my name and my power.â
River swallowed, her eyes still frantically scanning the area. She leaned in close and spoke in a whisper, her voice shaking. âI canât. If I leave, theyâll kill me.â
âNo they wonât,â Wraith said. âI wonât let them.â
âWhat can you do?â
Wraith opened her mouth but was cut off.
âWhat the hell is this?â said a gruff voice from behind her.
Wraith turned to see a cocky young guy walking over. He was wearing a white tank top, and he was covered in tattoos that marked him as a Purple Death member.
âEase off, mate,â Con said. âWeâre having us a chat with the girl.â
âYeah? Well youâre costing me money, mate ,â the man said and pushed Con back against the wall.
âIâm sorry, D,â River said to the pimp. âItâs my fault. Iââ
âIâll deal with you later,â D said, pointing at River.
âNot going to happen,â Wraith said and stepped between River and D. âWeâre leaving, and weâre taking her with us.â
D took a step forward. âBitch, you ainâtââ
Geek grabbed D by his shirt, slammed him against the wall twice, and held him at eye level, almost a foot off the ground.
âThatâs a very rude term,â Geek said and adjusted his glasses with his free hand. âYou need to apologize.â
D sneered and moved one hand to his waistband. âFuââ
Geek slammed him against the wall again. The pistol D was reaching for fell to the ground. Geek dropped him, picked up the gun, and looked the guy in the eye as he bent the barrel.
âWhat the hell are you?â D asked.
âWeâre the ones taking River away,â Wraith said. âAnd Iâll be back for the other girls. All of them.â
âBest bring an army,â D spat. âYou crossed theââ
âThe Purple Death,â Wraith said. âYeah, I know who you are. Iâm Wraith, and I donât need an army.â She reached into her jacket and pulled out her hand, fingers in a gun shape. She pointed at the front of a nearby abandoned car.
âYouâre a crazy bitââ
âBang,â Wraith said.
A ball of force hit the car, crushing in what was left of the front end, knocking it off its blocks, and sending it sliding ten feet down the road.
D stared at her with wide eyes.
âAnd I carry two,â she said, holding up her other hand.
D didnât say anything.
âBloody hell,â Con said through a laugh. âHeâs gone and pissed his pants.â
Wraith glanced down at the growing wet spot in his jeans then back up at his face. âSee you soon, snookums.â Then she turned and led River toward the nearest door-door, Con and Geek right behind her.
âAre you okay?â Geek asked when they reached the door to an old abandoned building.
Wraith reached into her bag, took out a doorknob, and stuck it in the spot where the original had been broken off.
âI thought you said you were taking me to the magisterâs house,â River said, watching Wraith.
Wraith wove an entropic formula over the door frame. âCon, you want to explain it?â
âShe can make magic doors,â Con said.
When the formula was complete, Wraith grabbed the handle and looked at Con. âThatâs a vast oversimplification.â
âAm I wrong?â
Wraith opened her mouth to protest, then closed it. âThatâs not the point,â she said after a moment and opened the door.
River stared with wide eyes.
âCome on,â Geek said. âItâs safe, I promise.â
T hey stepped out of a closet door, crossing nearly eight hundred miles, and into the foyer of Brigidâs home.
âWow,â River said as
