scraping the bottom of
my ice cream cup. “I told him to get lost. I have no interest in
getting back together with him. I don’t love him anymore. Heck, I’m
not sure that I ever loved him.”
“ Good. You’re too good for
him.” Dana tore her eyes from her kids and fixed them on me.
“Anything else happened last night?”
I shrugged and cleared my throat. “No. I
mean, Peter was a little aggressive but I kept things under control
and eventually got him to leave.”
“ What about your other
visitor? When did he leave?”
My heart dropped to my stomach. “What other
visitor? I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I blurted, the
squeak in my voice giving away just how much of a bad liar I was. I
kept my eyes on the playground while my pulse raced. I don’t know
why I lied. It was obvious Dana knew all about Cade.
“ Come on, Sidney. I saw him
go into your house last night and never saw him leave.”
I dropped the empty ice cream container on
the ground between my feet, buried my face in my hands and muttered
“Oh my God” over and over. I was mortified. If Dana saw Cade enter
my house in the middle of the night, there is a good chance other
equally nosy neighbors saw him too. Great, I said to myself. Now
the whole neighborhood knows just how much of a shameless,
desperate cougar I am. I was definitely in hell now.
“ Did you sleep with him,
Sidney?”
I still couldn’t look my friend in the eye.
The day before, I shamed her for ogling the neighbor’s kid, only to
get in bed with said kid just a few hours later. “I…I had a lapse
in judgment. It was wrong and it will never happen again.”
“ Look, I’m not judging you.
The truth is, if I were single and a kid that gorgeous wanted to
get in my pants, I would have gone for it without giving it a
second thought. I just want you to be careful. I won't say a word
to anyone about it but other less discreet people may have seen him
go in or out of your house last night. You
know how easily a reputation can be damaged in this
town.”
I met Dana’s gaze. “I know. I know. It won’t
happen again. I swear. Thank you for not telling anyone.”
“ No problem, honey," she
said with a smile while reaching out to rub my shoulder. "You know
I'll always have your back. Did Peter see Cade there?”
“ Not only does Peter know
Cade was there. He got his ass kicked by him too.”
Dana let out a dramatic gasp. “Jesus,
Sidney! They had a fight? Why? What happened?”
“ When Peter showed up, I
asked Cade to stay hidden in the bedroom. He did…until he heard me
scream.”
Dana's eyes bugged out of her head. “Why
were you screaming?”
“ Peter slapped me when I
wouldn’t let him grope me. I screamed. Cade heard me, ran
downstairs, and punched Peter in the face.”
“ Holy shit. Are you all
right?”
I nodded.
“ What a piece of work that
ex-husband of yours is.” She placed a hand on my knee. “I’m glad
you’re okay. That must have been so scary for you. Next time that
scumbag shows up at your door, don’t let him in. Call the police
and let them deal with him. Regarding Cade, my advice to you is: If
you want to have a fling, have a fling. Live your life. Just be
careful and make sure he’s worth the headache.”
“ Mommy!” Emily screamed
from the other side of the playground. Tears streamed down her
face.
“ I’m coming, honey!” Dana
hollered before getting on her feet and rushing to Emily's side. As
I watched my friend tend to her little girl’s knee scrape, I
thought about her last words. She was right. Cade was a gorgeous
sex god and by far the best I ever had. But a fling with him was
not worth ruining my reputation over. Thanks to Dana, I was more
convinced than ever that I had made the right decision by putting
an end to that reckless, dangerous affair.
CHAPTER III
Two days after my chat with Dana, I found
myself on a date at the local movie theater. After what happened
with Cade and
