it a try and show her what he was capable of. She looked at the man named Mike and thought she was a little more than willing to give him the chance to show what it was he was capable of. She smiled at him.
“Is that so?” She asked with a grin.
“So he likes to claim,” Will said, coming back for a chance to win her over.
She liked how there was already a little banter and bickering between the two of them. There was no doubt there was going to be a healthy bit of competition here and that was going to be something she looked forward to.
There was something about the two of them that made her excited about this arrangement. They were cute together, clearly comfortable with one another, and both together on this. That was something that was truly difficult to find when you were looking for a sponsor. In the chat rooms and forums of the website she had used, people had told horror stories about groups of shifters looking to bring new mates into their clan or family and that it had worked out horribly. Jealousy, fights, and even threats were usually what led to the inevitable downfall of everyone that was part of that kind of a lifestyle. As far as she was concerned, she was going to make sure all of this worked out for the best. She wanted this to succeed and they did too, clearly.
“So, this is your home?” she asked, looking around at the very nice kitchen.
“Yeah,” Will said, walking back into the kitchen. “We don’t have a whole lot to spend our money on, so we’ve been upgrading as we go. We’ll save up five hundred dollars here and there from work and try to invest it wisely. We never really go without spending money on something every month. It’s kind of our Achilles Heel.”
“His, not mine,” Mike added, walking around the island in the kitchen that looked like it had been designed by a master craftsman.
There was actual tile in the kitchen and the cabinets looked like they were custom built. Everything about this was impressive to her as she walked around it, inspecting everything. She had been in a lot of nice homes before, usually stripped down to lingerie for some photo shoot promoting produce or a new kind of sauce pan for people. She’d been able to admire those homes from afar, but to live in a home that had love and affection, that was wonderful.
She glanced up at Mike after he made the comment and knew he was hinting at other activities he was interested in, other things that he invested his time and money in. That piqued her interest and she knew that the moment Will left for work, things were probably going to get interesting around him. He reminded her of a hunter, someone who was testing the waters, following the tracks, and observing from afar. She looked at him and knew she was his prey. He was sizing her up, trying to classify her and understand what it was that she was interested in, what she wanted and how she was going to react to his little tricks and traps. She was ready for a good hunt. It had been a while since she’d been on such a merry chase.
“It’s lovely,” she said, looking at Will who was already in last place in this competition.
There was something about Mike that was drawing her toward him, but that glowing flame—the bonfire that was Mike—might not last like the adorable kindness that Will seemed to exhibit.
“Thank you,” Will said with confidence. “They say that some of the best investments you can make are in real estate and I’m hoping that when it’s time to pick up camp and move somewhere else, this will be an investment that comes back and returns to my wallet.”
“Where would you move?” she asked, genuinely curious about what it would be like for Will to pick a new home.
Already, he seemed to fit this home perfectly. She could see his fingerprints all over it. Mike was more of a hermit crab, moving in and settling for the time being. He didn’t look like he was the kind of guy who was interested in making things his own. She
