her card in. Mrs. Walters swished the cards all around with her hand, closed her eyes, and pulled one out of the bowl.
As it happened, it was
mine
! Mrs. Walters read it out loud to the class.
âThat would be cool to have all the money in the world,â David said.
âYou could buy anything,â said Abigail. âAnything you wanted.â
âThatâs the idea,â I said.
âYeah, letâs go with that one,â Matthew said. âWhatâs the point of wishing for anything else? Weâre ready.â
âSo thatâs your wish?â said Genie Bob. âThat was fast. Ya sure ya donât wanna think it over a little?â
âYup,â I said. âThatâs what we want. All the money in the world.â
âIs that your final answer?â asked Genie Bob.
âWait!â said Mia from the back row. âCan I just say one thing? If you had all the money in the world, Chase, a lot of people would want to rob you. Did you think of that?â
âSo what?â I said. âIf I had all the money in the world, I could build an electric fence around my gigantic mansion. Anybody who tried to rob me would get the shock of their life.â
Mia is a pain. No matter how good things are, she can always find some bad news. Thatâs why Alex and I call her âthe wet blanketâ behind her back.
âYou wouldnât be able to go out in public, you know,â said Mia.
âWho needs to go out in public?â I said. âIf I needed anything, Iâd send my flunkies out to get it for me.â
âSo you would just stay home all the time, Chase?â asked Mrs. Walters.
âSure, why not?â I said. âMy house would have every video game and movie in the world. Iâd have a cool game room, my own skate park, a food court, a swimming poolââ
âEven so, I think it would be boring to stay home all the time,â Ashley said.
âYou know, it just occurred to me that if one person had all the money in the world,â said Natalie, âthen nobody else in the world will have any money at
all
.â
âWell, yeah,â said Logan. âDuh!â
âBut if nobody else had any money, you wouldnât be able to buy anything,â Natalie said.
âWhy not?â I asked.
âHow could a store stay open if they didnât have any money?â asked Natalie. âThey couldnât buy any stuff to sell to people. Theyâd have no inventory.â
âNatalie makes a good point,â said Mrs. Walters. âAll the restaurants would have to close too, because they couldnât buy any food.â
âAnd if you went into a store to buy something, they wouldnât be able to give you change,â Natalie said, âbecause
youâd
have all the money in the world.â
âIf I had all the money in the world,â I said, âwhy would I need change?â
âThe point is, there would
be
no stores,â said Mia. âNo McDonaldâs. No Wal-Mart. No Staples. No malls. No nothing. Theyâd all go out of business.â
âNo Abercrombie & Fitch?â asked Abigail, visibly upset. âNo Hollister? No Aéropostale? Where will I go to shop?â
âYou couldnât shop,â said Alyssa. âThere would be no stores. Chase would have all the money. Youâd have to make your own clothes.â
âThe whole economy would collapse,â said Mia. âYour money would become worthless pieces of paper. We would have to go back to living off the land, the way people did thousands of years ago.â
âI never thought of it that way,â I admitted.
Maybe having all the money in the world wasnât such a great idea after all. Hmmm, this wasnât going to be as easy as I thought it would be.
âSo youâve changed your mind, Chase?â asked Mrs. Walters.
âI guess so,â I said.
âWait a minute!â Genie
