Weâll be careful,â Jessie said. She remembered Grandfather Aldenâs advice. Find out what new people like to do, and youâll make a friend. Thatâs just what she was going to do with Sandy Munson.
âHow did you learn so much about Drummond Castle?â Jessie began in her friendliest voice. âYou seem to know your way around this big place so well after such a short time.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â Sandy demanded.
âIâm sorry,â Jessie apologized. âI only meant â¦â Jessie stopped before she got into any more trouble with Sandy.
Sandy pointed to a low cabinet. âHand me that box, please,â she ordered Benny. âItâs heavy, so watch out.â
Benny carefully pulled down a large leather-covered box. âWhew, whatâs in here?â The box was heavy!
âSilverware!â Sandy snapped. âNow be careful!â
Benny was as careful as could be. He held the heavy box in his arms for Sandy to take. Yet she grabbed it so fast that it crashed to the floor. Silverware scattered all over.
âNow look what happened!â Sandy yelled. âPlease leave the rest of the work in here. Iâll finish up by myself.â
Benny Alden wasnât used to sharp voices. He bit his lip. âIâm sorry,â he apologized.
Sandy took the ledger from Jessie. âIâll do the rest.â Jessie, Violet, and Benny left the dining room quietly.
âCome on,â Jessie said. âCarrie said we should take our lunch down to the lake after we finished in the dining room. I guess Sandy thinks weâre finished.â
âA picnic would be nice,â Violet said softly. âThat was a dusty job.â
The children went to their rooms for their jackets and came back down the narrow twisty staircase.
âLook,â Benny whispered when the children reached the second-floor landing. âGrandfather must be finished with his work, too. His doorâs open.â
But when they entered his room, they got a surprise. Mr. Tooner was in Mr. Aldenâs room, kneeling on the floor. He was trying to pry up some floorboards underneath the carpet.
Benny felt his nose twitch. âAaaachoo!â he cried when he couldnât keep from sneezing.
Startled, Mr. Tooner turned around. âWhat are you kids doing here?â
Jessie stepped forward. âWe came to visit our grandfather.â
Mr. Tooner banged in the floorboard with his hammer. âWell, you can see heâs not here. He and that boy have been out on the porch trying to destroy that wisteria vine thatâs older than the two of âem put together! Thatâs where they are. Hmph!â
Violet was a quiet one but not when it came to her family. âMy grandfather is a wonderful gardener. Why he even had a rose named after him! He would never destroy any living thing!â
Mr. Tooner looked as if he was about to apologize, but he changed his mind.
âWell, if I didnât always have to be fixing things for all the guests that keep coming here, then maybe I could have trimmed that vine myself. Now scat!â
Jessie took Bennyâs hand, then Violetâs, and the three went down to the kitchen. âI just wish people around here would let us help more,â Jessie said to Carrie.
âHelp?â Carrie said. âWhy you children are just in time to help me with this platter of sandwiches.â
Jessie helped Carrie put sandwiches on a big tray. âSorry weâre so early for lunch, but Sandy told us to leave for now. She wants to finish the work in the dining room by herself.â
Carrie shook her head. âDear, dear. I wish she wouldnât. She means well, but she can be all thumbs around delicate things. She doesnât listen. Well, Iâd better get up there before thereâs a crash. I know you children can fix yourselves a little picnic together, now canât you?â
âWe sure
