down but I would fall onto grass.
I bent over and climbed halfway out. The cold breeze blew up my skirt and goosebumps formed on my thighs. I inched my way down the roof and grabbed the edge. I slowly lowered myself down and hung by my finger-tips. I looked at the grass below and planned my fall. I let go and crashed to the ground, falling right on my ass.
Nobody noticed me. I crept to my car and started it. I didn't turn on my headlights until I was safely away.
I arrived at Josh's place and his eyes widened at my short skirt. He instantly took me in his arms and kissed me hard. His hands wandered down and played with my ass under the skirt. “Let's go to my room.”
Josh went to close the door and a hand pushed through, revealing Abel.
“Who the fuck are you?” Josh asked.
Abel was full of rage. “Her stepbrother.” His fist flew through the air, connecting with Josh's jaw and knocking him to the ground.
The color drained from my face. Abel continued to punch Josh while he was down. “Stop it, Abel!” I yelled.
Blood dripped off his fists as he stood up. “Get in my car, Kate.”
I stepped away from him and he clenched his fists again. I didn't want to cross him. I stepped over Josh's limp body and went to Abel's Dodge Charger. I sat down in the passenger seat as I waited for Abel, my eyes wet with tears.
What was he still doing in there?
Abel stalked out of the house and got into the car. His anger was clearly visible. “I'm telling Mom and Dad about all this.”
I opened my mouth to fight back but thought better of it. I didn't want to make him more furious.
Chapter Six
My mom's eyes went big as Abel told them the news when we got home.
I looked back outside. I thought maybe I should just make a run for it. I knew that it would only make matters worse though. I was caught red-handed. There wasn't anything I could say to get myself out if it.
Why did Abel have to be such an asshole?
My stepdad motioned for me to sit down at the dinner table. “Your mom and I don't like when you lie to us. If you have a new boyfriend then you need to tell us.”
My stepdad went on and on, boring me to tears by his speech.
“You guys never cared before. Why do you care now?” I sneered.
“Breaking curfew once or twice isn't a big deal. Lying to us is a very big deal,” my mom added.
Abel stood in the corner with his arms crossed over his chest. His eyes were still full of anger and the knuckles on his hands were bruised and bloodied.
“You're grounded, Kate,” my stepdad said.
“You're not my real father!”
“As long as you live here, you're going to follow my rules. Now, go to your room! You're grounded until your mother and I say otherwise!”
I looked at my mom and her face didn't waver.
“Fine!” I pounded my fists on the table and stood up. I walked by Abel and slapped him on the cheek. “Don't you ever do that to me again.”
Abel rubbed his cheek and didn't say a word.
I slammed my bedroom door shut and sat down on my queen bed, huffing and puffing. I was furious at him, my face flush with rage. How could Abel treat me like that? I took a few deep breaths to calm myself down. I looked over at the clock—it read two in the morning. I only had four hours until school started. I got undressed and slipped under the covers.
I turned off the lamp on the nightstand and lay down. I was still reeling after my argument with my family. I tried to close my eyes but I was too wired. I didn't see myself getting much sleep that night. I had to get my mind off of Abel or else I'd be up until dawn.
Chapter Seven
The next day, I tried to forget all about the night before. Dwelling on my punishment wasn't going to make anything better. I went to school and was not ready for the shitstorm that was about to arrive.
I was at my locker getting out my chemistry book when Josh
