not take her away. That would be wrong.â
Kyle tried to feel happy. He tried to smile, but his smile went wobbly too. He felt so sad he wanted to cry. But the sadness was not for himself. It was for Bill.
Bill lived all alone. Kyle lived with his mom.
Billâs daughter moved far away. Kyleâs dad lived close by.
Bill didnât see Tia very often. Kyle saw his dad every week.
Kyle looked at his mom. She smiled at him. She didnât say a word.
Kyle looked at Treasure. The dog put her nose on his knee. He patted her head.
Bill stood up. âThank you for the coffee,â he said. He bent to pat the dog. âGood-bye, Treasure,â he said. He walked slowly to the door.
âYou take her!â Kyle called. âYou take Otter. You need her more than me!â
Bill turned around. âOh!â he said.
He smiled a real smile this time. The dog ran to him. He bent to scratch behind her ear. âThank you, Kyle.â
Kyle tried to feel happy. But his eyes stung. His heart ached.
Bill looked at Kyle. âI have a better idea,â he said. âYou love this dog as much as I do. Why donât we share her? Iâll take her sailing when youâre at school. You can pick her up on your way home.â
Kyle ran over. He scratched behind the dogâs other ear. âOkay.â He smiled at Bill, a huge happy smile.
âWell,â Bill said. âI must go now. I want to take the For Sale sign down.â He walked to the door again. âI feel like sailing after all.â
Kyle grinned. âIâm seven, but Iâve never ever been sailing!â
Bill turned around. He looked at Mom. She smiled and nodded.
âThen some days the three of us will sail together. You, me and Treasure.â
âBut, you said her name is Otter!â
âOn the boat I am no longer Bill. I am Capân Bill. When we are sailing the dog will be Otter. The rest of the time weâll call her Treasure. Thatâs a better name anyway, donât you think?â
Kyle looked at Bill. He nodded. âSheâs the best treasure anyone ever found!â
