lawns, and flower beds, and tennis courts. Off to the right there was a swimming pool. At one end of the pool was a high, high tower and diving board. It looked awfully high. There was noway I was going off that tower, but I planned to spend a whole lot of time around the pool. One of the very best things about going away for a tournament was being around the pool and everybody just fooling around and having a great time.
âLook at the sign!â Kia said, pointing ahead.
There in gigantic letters it said âWelcome Basketball Players! Tournament Headquarters!â
âLen said that almost all the teams are staying right here at the resort,â my father said.
He pulled the van to a stop right under the overhang in front of the main entrance. I looked back to see Coach Barkley pull in right behind us.
âEverybody out,â my father announced. âAnd make sure you take your bags and things with you.â
We all tumbled out of the van and circled around to the back of the vehicle. My father opened the doors and bags started to tumble out. He stopped them with his body and then started to pass out everybodyâs bag.
âAnybody want to go for a swim?â Kia asked.
âNo swimming,â my father said. âEverybody needs to get their stuff up to their room and get settled in before
anybody
goes
anywhere
.â
âHere we are, all safe and sound!â Coach Barkley said as he came up beside us along with the otherhalf of the team.
âThat was some drive,â my father said.
âNot too bad. As soon as we get everybody checked in, I want to have a team meeting in my room,â Coach said.
âSounds good⦠see you up there in ten minutes.â
âHere we are,â my father said as he swiped the card against the door and the little light turned green. He pushed open the door of our room.
âWeâre all staying in the same room?â Tristan asked as he pushed in right behind my father.
âSeven of us are staying in the same
double
room,â my father explained as we all crowded into the room. âAnd Coach Barkley and the other six guys are staying in a double room across the hall.â
The room had two double beds, a big dresser with a large TV atop it, and sliding doors opening up to a balcony.
âThe other room is right through this door,â my father said as he pushed it open. We all surged through after him, although there really wasnât anything new or different to see â the second room was identical.
âSo who sleeps where?â David asked.
âYou, Jamie, Tristan and Mark sleep in thisroom â two of you in each bed â and Nick, Kia and I get the other room. Nick shares with me and Kia, of course, gets her own bed,â my father explained.
âYou see? There are some advantages to being a girl,â Kia said. âAlthough that advantage isnât as big as youâd think, because I have to share a room with Nick.â
âWhatâs wrong with being in my room?â I demanded.
âAre you kidding? Itâs like sleeping with a chain saw running in the same room!â
âItâs not that bad!â I protested. Besides, what did she have to complain about? I was the one who had to share a bed with my father. What Kia didnât know was that my mother always said that compared to my father I didnât make a sound.
âAt least we wonât hear him from the other room,â Tristan said. âWeâll close the door and â â
âThe door isnât ever going to be closed,â my father said, cutting him off. âMy job is to watch all of you, and I canât supervise through a closed door.â
âOkay,â Tristan said. âSo the door stays open.â
âAnd nobody goes in or out through the hall door in your room. The door to the hall from your room stays closed, locked and chained. Everybody goes in and out through the door in
