auditions,â Liberty insisted. âSomething stinks like Smelly Feet!â
âAnd sheâs not even from New Jerseyâsheâs from New York!â Gracie protested. âShe shouldnât get to play a fairy in the
NEW JERSEY Nutcracker
.â
âMaybe Justine called her old
pas de deux
partner Marcus and asked him for a favor,â Rochelle suggested. âIt would be so like her to try and outdo the Divas.â
âWhatâs done is done,â Toni said and sniffed. âAt least Gracie did what she was supposed to do.â
âWe did try,â Anya insisted. âWe did our best.â
âWho cares about the stupid
Nutcracker
? Iâm not doing some lame role,â Liberty said.
âOh, yes, you are.â Miss Toni stood up and placed her hands on her hips. âEvery one of you is doing that show, and you are going to make the best of it. Divas donât quit. I wonât allow it.â
âThatâs not fair,â Liberty sulked. âI hate my part.â
âYou get what you get and donât get upset,â Rochelle teased her. âI bet youâll make a cute gingerbread dude.â She waddled around with stiff arms and legs.
âThatâs enough,â Toni said, cutting her off. âThere are no small parts, just small dancers.â
âIâm a small dancer.â Gracie giggled. âBut Iâm Clara!â
Toni smiled. âYou are indeed. Looks like Gracie won this round, hands down. Only one question remains: who will be your prince?â
âThatâs right! They didnât list the name of the Nutcracker Prince!â Scarlett exclaimed.
Gracie gulped. âYou donât suppose theyâll make me dance the whole time by myself, do you?â she asked Miss Toni. Gracie was always full of confidence in any group number, duo, or trio. But when she had to take the spotlight by herself, stage fright set in.
âRest assured, there will be a Nutcracker in
The Nutcracker
,â Miss Toni told her. âI just wonder whatâor whoâMarcus has up his sleeve.â
Rehearsals started immediately the next day at Dances Minnelli Studioâthere was no time to waste. They all had to learn the choreography, get fitted for their costumes, and have everything ready for the holiday audiences in seven short weeks.
âI know itâs a lot for you to learn,â Mr. Minnelli told Gracie. âBut Iâm confident you can do it.â
âOf course I can!â Gracie answered. âOne time, Miss Toni had me learn a duet in two hours for a major competition in Atlanta and I did it, no sweat. Donât worry, Mr. Minnelli. Iâve got your back.â
The choreographer smiled. âI have no doubt about that, young lady. Just bring that energy and confidence to your role and weâll be in great shape.â
âAnd you,â he turned to Addison. âIâm counting on you to be a breathtaking Sugar Plum. You come highly recommended.â
âI told you!â Rochelle elbowed Scarlett. âI knew Justine was behind this.â
âWe donât know that for sure,â Bria reminded her. âAddison
is
a really good dancer.â
âIâm just as good,â Liberty said. âBetter. I donât scrunch up my face when Iâm concentrating.â
They watched as Addison glided across the floor in her toe shoes, as light as if she weredancing on clouds. âI hate to admit it, but sheâs good,â Rochelle remarked. â
Really
good.â
Liberty put her hands over her ears. âI am not listening to this! Itâs bad enough we have to be in this silly show. Now I have to play second fiddle to one of the Stinky Feet?â
Bria nodded. âIâm used to it. My sister is amazing at everything she does. Iâm always a step behind her.â
Scarlett glanced over at Gracie, who was twirling around the stage, holding a red-and-gold
