how Laura Bruce from Year 12 found out her boyfriend was two-timing her.â
âCrap,â says Alex.
âNo, itâs true. A spirit told Laura that, and it was right.â Poppy pauses. âThe next day she caught him with his tongue down someone elseâs throat. Now all the girls are doing it.â
âWhat? Sticking their tongues down her boyfriendâs throat?â
âNo, Alex, you smartarse. Séances. Everyoneâs. Doing. Séances.â
Evie sits there listening, a thousand thoughts flying through her head. Shit. A séance, she thinks. Should I? Poppyâll think Iâm a straightarse if I say no. Whatâll I say?
âEvie?â Alex has been watching her.
âHmm?â Evie pretends she hasnât noticed.
âDo you ⦠you know, feel okay about doing one?â
âOh, a séance?â Evie stares at her knees. âOh yeah, Iâll be â¦â
âPop?â Alex butts in. Evie hears the tone in her voice. âPoppy, I donât know, maybe itâs not such a good idea.â
âEh?â Poppy answers. Thereâs a second of silence before Poppy adds, âOh. Yeah.â
âOh, donât worry about me.â Evie shakes her head. âItâs just â silly stuff. Iâm sure itâs a load of crap anyway.â
âSee!â Poppy eyeballs Alex. âSheâs not freaked out. Are you, Evie?â
âNoooo,â Evie lies.
âSure?â Alex frowns. âAbsolutely positive?â
âYeah,â Evie nods. âLetâs do it.â
Â
Evie takes the pizza boxes out to the recycling. She needs the air, and a few seconds to herself. Leaning against the garage wall, she takes slow deep breaths.
âThis is nothing,â she says to herself. âDonât read anything into it. Itâs silly fun, thatâs all.â
But, as Evie walks back into the house, a familiar hum sings quietly in her head. Tonight she chooses to ignore it.
Poppy has Alex cutting out letters of the alphabet into little squares. âThe numbers have to be bigger,â she is telling her. âWe have to be able to see them.â
âHow do you know all this?â
âI looked it up on the Net.â Poppy spreads out the letters and the words âYESâ and âNOâ around the dining table.
âArenât there rules and stuff with a séance?â Alex asks.
âDonât know,â Evie lies.
âNah,â Poppy says, walking over to the light switch.
âHang on,â Alex calls. âIâm turning on the lamp. Iâm not sitting here in the dark.â
Alex frowns at Evie and mouths âAre you okay?â. In return, Evie shrugs. Itâs too late now. Still the voices duel in her head. âWhy am I doing this?â âRelax, itâs just a bit of fun.â Evie feels her hands and feet starting to sweat. âI shouldnât be doing this. This isnât a good idea.â âCalm down. Stop being so uptight.â Evie takes off her thongs, wiping the soles of her feet on the carpet.
âOkay. So does everyone understand how it works, then?â Poppy asks.
Evie hasnât heard a thing sheâs said.
âAlex?â
âIâll just go with it, Pop.â
âEvie?â
Evie nods.
âEvie, are you sure youâre okay?â Alex asks aloud this time.
Poppy stops and faces Evie.
âIâm just being stupid,â Evie sighs. âOkay. I feel better now Iâve said it. Letâs do it.â
âWe can stop at any time, Evie,â Poppy tells her. âYou just let me know. Iâll be in charge.â
The girls place a finger on a glass that sits in the middle of the letters.
âIâll lead,â Poppy whispers.
The others nod.
âIs anyone there?â Poppy asks. âIs anyone there to talk to us?â
Silence.
âIs anyone there?â Poppy asks again.
