follow them,â suggested Mudpoo, âIâm sure theyâre up to no good.â
In silence, they followed the piratesâ tracks, carefully and cautiously, back up to the old gold mine.
O w!â âOooh!â âOw!â âArh, arrghh!â The pirates groaned. âWhat attacked us?â muttered Snot.
The pirates were all sitting around their campfire, nursing their scratches from the owls.
âGhosts?â suggested a frightened Pong.
âNah, crazy birds!â growled Bones.
âWhat were they doing?â asked Grot. âMaybe they didnât like us putting out the poisoned carrots?â
âDonât be an idiot . . . it was that loud, banging sound that scared them,â argued Bones.
âGhosts?â asked Pong again.
âNah, just crazy birds, Iâm sick of this place. Where is Fungus McPhee?â complained Snot.
âIf he doesnât show up soon, weâre going,â growled Bones.
Mudpoo and Harry were laying in the long grass, just by the old goldmine. They were well hidden and were listening intently to the piratesâ every word.
âYou useless, rowdy lot,â yelled a gruff voice from the edge of the forest.
âFUNGUS McPHEE!â cried the pirates together in surprise.
âWhere have you been?!â demanded Bones, âWeâve been attacked and chased by goodness-knows-what and thereâs been no sign of you for days.â
âIâve been busy,â spat Fungus McPhee, âserves you right for being so stupid.â
âWhat do you mean, âstupidâ?â snarled Snot.
âYouâre sitting outside a goldmine, right at the feet of a fortune and you want to catch rabbits?â gurgled Fungus McPhee, âYouâre thicker than bricks and thatâs a fact!â and he spat again.
âWhat is our job? Where is the gold?â demanded Bones.
âAll in good time,â Fungus McPhee muttered spitting hard into the coals of the campfire so that the flames hissed and spat back at him.
The pirates had all of their eyes glued on Fungus McPhee. Mudpoo and Harry held their breath; Fungus McPhee looked frightening. They watched silently, carefully peeping through the long grass; unnoticed by the horrible crew.
âYour job is simple,â Fungus went on, âall you need to do is deliver my parcels and make certain they arrive at their destination, safe and sound. Only one, or two of you will need to carry my parcel, itâs that simple and . . . Iâll pay you well!â
âWait . . . ,â asked Bones, âall weâre doing is delivering your gold to somewhere, thatâs it, thatâs all?â
âYesss . . . ,â hissed Fungus McPhee, âyouâve got that right.â
âAh thatâs a piece of cake,â snivelled Snot, âshow us the gold now and weâll be off, itâll get to wherever safe and sound,â he said winking and nudging Pong.
âHmmm,â replied Fungus McPhee, âIâm sure you will,â he raised one eyebrow which made him look even more fierce.
âWhere are we delivering the parcel to?â asked Grot, who asked the cleverest question.
âIâm glad you asked,â replied Fungus McPhee, spitting violently at the ground, âAMERICA!â
âAMERICA!â repeated the pirates, dumbfounded.
âWhy donât you sell the gold in Australia and save the trip?â spluttered Grot who was the only pirate asking decent questions.
âPerhaps youâd like to see my gold?â taunted Fungus McPhee, as he walked towards the door of the gold mine with a large rusty key in his hand.
All of the pirates sat frozen, their eyes transfixed on him.
FUNGUS McPHEE was about to reveal his AWFUL SECRET to the waiting pirates!
E veryone held their breath as Fungus McPhee carefully opened the lock The gate creaked and groaned as it opened. He dragged out a large old, hessian
