about Benedick â you must big him up, Iâll say heâs crazy for Bea.â
They see Beatrice sneak in and take up herplace behind the sun loungers.
âReady?â Hero whispers. Then she turns up the volume.
HERO: No, Iâm telling you â
Beatrice is a tough cookie
. No man stands a chance of taming her.
URSULA (proving sheâs a quick learner): But youâre sure
Benedickâs in love with her
?
HERO: I heard it from Claudio and Pedro. They think I should tell her, but I said it was a bad idea.
URSULA: How come?
HERO: Itâs obvious.
Beatrice is too big headed to listen
. Sheâll never fall in love with anyone except herself.
URSULA: Youâre right. Better not tell her in case she laughs in Benâs face.
HERO: Thereâs not a guy on this planet that Bea would fancy, no matter how smart, classy or gorgeous he is. If heâs too handsome, she makes her sarcastic lady-boy put-downs. Too dark, too tall, too short â sheâll always findsomething to make fun of. Either the guy talks too little or not enough â he canât win.
URSULA (sighing): Thatâs not good.
HERO: But whoâs going to tell Bea sheâs out of order. No, donât look at me â sheâd make mincemeat out of me.
URSULA: Why not risk it and tell her anyway?
HERO: No, Iâve got a better idea. Iâll find Benedick and persuade him to forget all about her. Iâll invent a nasty rumour to ruin her reputation.
URSULA: Oh, thatâs mean! But surely Beaâs clever enough to see Benedickâs good points. In fact, to tell you the truth, Hero, and donât take offence â I rate Benedick higher than your husband-to-be! Talking of which, can I get a sneak preview of your wedding dress?
HERO: Itâs in my closet. Come and see.
Job done. The girls have sprung the trap and go off arm in arm. Beatrice creeps out in total shock.
âMy ears are burning. It canât be true! Am I really that conceited? Well, thatâs all about to change. And, Benedick, carry on loving me and Iâll love you back! Iâm even ready to go shopping for a ring, because the fact is, if they say you deserve me, Iâm totally ready to believe it!â
As you can see, things are moving fast. Iâm roaming the villa with my
Lite
crew, picking up the next scrap of scandal when we come across Pedro chatting with Benedick, Claudio and Leonato in the hot tub.
âAs soon as youâve tied the knot, I have to leave,â Pedro tells Claudio. âIâve got a meeting in Aragon with the head of the Italian football league. Ben, do you wanna come along to keep me company? Youâre still fancy-free, I take it?â
âEr, not totally,â Benedick mumbles.
Pedro gives him a long, meaningful look. âHmm, now I think about it, you do look a bit more serious than usual.â
âMaybe heâs in lurve!â Claudio crows. Nudge nudge, wink wink!
âNever!â Pedro gasps. âHeâs lost money on the horses, thatâs all.â
âIâve got toothache.â Benedick gives the worst excuse ever.
The others carry on ribbing him something rotten.
âYeah, go ahead and laugh,â Ben says. âItâs different when youâre the one in pain.â
Claudio is like a dog at a bone. âDefinitely in lurve!â he laughs.
Pedro sets off another chain of quick-fire banter. âHe doesnât
look
like a man in love.â
âYeah, he does. Heâs begun to care about the way he dresses for a start.â
âHas he restyled his hair?â
âHeâs had a shave!â
âThat does make him look younger,â Leonato cuts in.
Pedro nods. âAnd heâs wearing aftershave. You can smell it a mile off.â
âOh well, thatâs all the proof you need. Youâre right, heâs
definitely
in love.â
âPlus, heâs gone all moody on us.â
Claudio grins and
