bother him a bit to talk about his love life with her. At least it had opened the door for him to nonchalantly let her know he was available. “Call it a tit-for-tat kind of thing. You tell me how to get rid of Jessica and I’ll tell you how to make this overgrown puppy back here stop barking all the time.”
Tanner could almost see the wheels turning in her pretty head as she considered his suggestion. Then her luscious lips dipped into a frown.
    “I’m a reporter.”
“I know. I saw you at the accident scene yesterday.” The sight of her had been enough to give him pause. Thankfully, he had just finished pulling one of the victims from a car when he had seen her. Getting his first glimpse of her incredible legs right along with her front that he had immediately decided was as equally heart-palpitating as her back had taken him a moment get to his head back in the game.
“I’ve written a slew of news stories in my career, but the one thing I’ve never written is the love advice column.”
Tanner bit back a grin. “In other words, you don’t have any advice for me.”
She scrunched her face in a way that reminded him of a little girl trying to talk her way out of trouble. “Change your phone number.”
Tanner threw his head back and laughed. “Really? That’s the best you can do? And how is that not being any ruder than me simply not answering the phone when she calls?”
She huffed a breath. “I’m thinking on my feet here. In an area I’m not well versed in, might I add. Come over for dinner tonight. By then I’ll come up with something.”
Tanner almost laughed at the look on her face as if she couldn’t believe she had just asked him to dinner. “What time and do you mind if I bring a friend?”
A keen understanding moved through her gorgeous eyes. She knew he meant Nick and she knew damn well what sort of city they lived in.
“Seven thirty and no, I don’t mind.”
Behind him, Precious gave a sharp bark as if making sure he was invited, too.
Tanner glanced back at the dog. “I’ll bring Precious. Let him hang with me today.”
He had felt inspired when the idea came to him. He liked the overgrown puppy and had intended on spending the day doing things around the house anyway. Letting the dog tag along behind him had seemed like the perfect way to weasel his way into her house later this evening. Her invitation to dinner only made his plan better.
“I’ll untie him, he can follow me around, and give his vocal cords a rest.”
This time, her giggle held a disbelieving ring. “You want to dog-sit Precious?”
Tanner shrugged. “Why not? I’m off for the next forty-eight hours, we get along fine, and it’ll give him something to do.” He looked at the dog over his shoulder. “What do you think, dude? You want to hang with me today?”
    Precious barked his agreement.
Tanner looked back at Alyssa and grinned. “See. He’s good to go.”
She shook her head, but her luscious lips were stretched in an ear-to-ear smile that accented her high cheekbones to princess perfection. “Fine. And over dinner, you can tell me how you do that.”
“Only if you can give me good advice on how to get rid of Jessica by then,” Tanner countered, hoping she wouldn’t come up with a damn thing so he would get more home-cooked dinners out of her.
That wish was as much for the time to spend with her as it was for the food she cooked. He didn’t know how good she was in the kitchen, but anything she fixed had to be more edible than anything he could manage. It was known far and wide that he was a disaster in the kitchen. He was the man that could burn boiling water.
She rolled her beautiful eyes. “Untie the dog and go have fun. I’ll see you, him, and your friend at dinner.”
    “Yes, ma’am.”
Tanner watched her shapely hips swerve like a well-oiled metronome as she turned on her heel and headed back into the house. He had a date, Nick did, too, whether the man knew it or not. He
