“There’s no way he understood you.”
Tanner lifted a brow. “Are you sure? Dogs are pretty smart. Some say they’re even smarter than humans.”
Not exactly sure how to respond to that, she settled for asking, “What’s this idea you’re wanting to run by me?”
“Untie him.” His tone made it sound like the simplest suggestion on the planet.
Alyssa shook her head. “I’m headed to work. I can’t leave him loose to roam the neighborhood all day. Something might happen to him.”
Tanner’s grin widened. “See,” he shot back at Precious. “I told you she cares about you.” Precious made a noncommittal sound as Tanner turned his attention back to Alyssa and started to say something else. An electronic alarm broken by a computerized voice yelling, “Warning, do not answer,” over and over again sounded from the pocket of his pants.
He scowled and let it continue until it silenced itself, but just when his lips parted again, the ringtone started repeating its cycle. This time, he shoved a hand in his pocket to silence it.
Amused and intrigued, Alyssa pursed her lips as his gaze returned to hers. “I take it you’re heeding your phone’s warning.”
“There’s a reason I have that particular ringtone for that caller,” he said dryly.
Unable to help herself, Alyssa prodded. “Ex-girlfriend?”
“Not an ex. Or a girlfriend,” he quickly added. “Two dates that won’t end.”
Alyssa folded her arms beneath her breasts and gave him a narrow-eyed glare. “I can’t imagine any man that was as sweet to that dog over there as you were just now being rude enough to a woman not to even answer her phone calls.”
He raked a hand through is blond hair. “Hell, I don’t like being rude, but Jessica is…” He shook his head.
“Have you tried telling her you’re not interested?” This was surreal. She was standing in her backyard talking to one of the smokin’ hottest hunks she had ever met, one she had known for all of five minutes at that, discussing his love life.
“Several times. Nick has, too. Hell, we told her upfront we weren’t looking for anything serious. She wants forever. We don’t. Not with her or any woman.” Stars of mischief twinkled in his eyes as he shoved his hands in the pockets of his pants and rocked back on his heels. “So tell me, Dear Abby. What’s a couple of guys to do next?”

She was amazing. It was all Tanner could think as he stood there gazing at her, waiting for an answer. Up close, his scotch beauty was even more spectacular than he had realized. Her eyes were an olive-green set in an angelic face with high cheekbones and bow-shaped lips that had his fingers tingling to touch and his mouth burning to capture. One side of her light brown hair fell over her shoulder, the ends nearly reaching the waistband of the khaki skirt she wore with a purple blouse. Both garments hugged a shapely body molded to bring a man to his knees. The fact that she was standing a good inch taller than he was thanks to the stilettos on her feet didn’t bother him a bit. He had long since grown accustomed to being short for a guy and had become grateful that women seemed to think his looks made up for that.
Alyssa bowed her head and giggled. The sound moved over him like whipped cream, soft and smooth and oh so tempting to his taste buds and his rapidly stiffening cock. Forget that Nick had said sparking up a fling with this woman wasn’t a good idea. She was fucking hot and, if the flames he had seen in her eyes when she first stepped out the door and gave him a slow once-over from his head to his feet were any indication, she was hot for him.
Not that he planned to leave Nick out of the equation. It was rare that Tanner and Nick went solo with a woman. Still, he had learned a long time ago that if a woman found him attractive, she would be attracted to Nick, too.
“I’m sorry. I had no right to pry. It’s just…”
    “I’m serious.” It didn’t
