was twelve thirtyâjust a half an hour until the Big Book Drop.
âDid you have a nice lunch, Miss Kraft?â asked Andrea, the big brownnoser.
âWhoâs Miss Kraft?â asked Miss Kraft. âIâm The Great Kraftini! Watch this !â
She snapped her fingers. There was a big puff of smoke, and the empty desk in front of the room disappeared.
âCool!â we all yelled.
âHow did you do that?â asked Alexia.
âOh, a magician never reveals her secrets,â said Miss Kraft.
âCan you make Andrea disappear?â I asked.
âOh, snap!â said Ryan.
âThatâs mean, Arlo!â said Andrea.
âKids learn fast when you combine teaching with magic,â Miss Kraft told us. âHere, Iâll show you. Grab this rope, A.J., and tie me up.â
âTie you up?â I asked. âAre you sure ?â
âSure Iâm sure,â said Miss Kraft. âGo ahead. Make it really tight.â
I wrapped the thick rope around and around Miss Kraft until she was completely wrapped up from head to toe. Then I tied the ends together tightly. There was no way she could escape.
âExcuse me,â said Andrea. âWhat could we possibly learn from this ?â
âA lot!â said Miss Kraft. âWhile I try to escape from the ropes, I want you kids to write down the fifty American states in ABC order. If I canât escape in five minutes or you donât have the states in order, a five-hundred-pound weight will fall on my head.â
We all looked up at the ceiling. There was a big weight hanging over Miss Kraftâs head! *
Miss Kraft is daft!
âThatâs crazy!â yelled Neil the nude kid.
âPlease donât do this, Miss Kraft,â begged Emily. âItâs very dangerous.â
âI must do it,â said Miss Kraft. âItâs the only way you will learn. Hurry! The clock is ticking!â
âAlabama!â Ryan shouted. âThe first state is Alabama! Somebody write it down!â
Emily grabbed a sheet of paper and a pencil. Everybody started yelling out states.
âAlaska!â yelled Andrea. âItâs Alabama, Alaska ⦠Arizona ⦠Arkansas⦠. Whatâs next?â
âWyoming!â I yelled.
âNo, dumbhead,â said Andrea. âWyoming comes last .â
âI knew that,â I lied.
âCalifornia!â shouted Michael. âThe next state is California! And then comes Colorado and Connecticut!â
Emily wrote the states down as fast as she could. Miss Kraft struggled to free herself from the ropes, but I had wrapped them pretty tightly.
âFour minutes left!â shouted Alexia.
We racked our brains to put the states in ABC order: Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho. This was hard to do!
âHurry!â Emily shouted. âThree minutes left!â
Everybody was freaking out. We got Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Kansas. Miss Kraft couldnât get free from the ropes. She was grunting and sweating.
âKentucky!â Andrea shouted. âThen comes Louisiana!â
âTwo minutes left!â shouted Neil.
We got all the M states: Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, and Montana.
âOne minute left!â Ryan shouted. âHurry!â
âNebraska and Nevada!â shouted Alexia.
âAnd then all those âNewâ states!â shouted Neil. âNew Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, and New York!â
We were running out of time, and there were still a lot of states left. In a few seconds the five-hundred-pound weight was going to drop on Miss Kraftâs head!
âNorth Carolina!â Andrea shouted. âNorth Dakota! Ohio! Oklahoma!â
âFive seconds left!â shouted Ryan.
âThereâs no more time!â shouted Andrea.
âOh nooooooooooooooo !â
I closed my eyes so I wouldnât have to see the five-hundred-pound
