but I plan to show him what he’ll be missing if he ends things. I’m seeing him for dinner tonight, which I’ll be cooking.”
Joy nodded. “Food is a good start. Couple that with some great sex and you could have him eating out of your hand. I know that works with my Kevin.”
Chyna laughed. “I’ll have to remember that.” She hit the button to turn on the computer that sat on top of the desk. “I’d better take the phone off the answering service.”
“Yeah, I should get started as well. I’ll see you when it’s your lunch hour.”
Chyna went through the steps to have the phone ringing at the reception desk, then looked at the work she had to have completed before the end of the work day. Now that she’d spoken to Joy about Jaxon, Chyna wasn’t feeling as confident about her ability to change his mind as she had before. What if he did walk away at the end of the two months? Yes, those months would give her plenty of time to persuade him not to, but they would also give her plenty of time to fall for him.
She gave herself a mental shake and kick in the butt. She wasn’t going to think like that. It would only doom her before she’d even begun. Only positive thinking about Jaxon would be allowed from here on out.
Chapter Three
Chyna rushed home at the end of her day. After she arrived at her apartment, the first thing she did was check on the roast beef. The oven had turned off at the right time, and the meat looked done to perfection. She practically ran to her bedroom to change out of her work clothes so she could get started on the rest of the meal before Jaxon arrived.
She hated to admit it, but she’d thought about him all day. She’d also ached to be in his arms again. It had been a while since she’d last been with a man, and now her body craved Jaxon’s touch.
Back in the kitchen, she peeled some potatoes and put them on to boil. She left the roast to rest in the oven for now. She’d have to take it out later to make gravy from the drippings. As for a vegetable, she had some fresh green beans she’d bought the other day. It didn’t take very long for her to have them ready to be steamed.
Once the potatoes came to a boil and she’d turned down the burner, Chyna went into the living room to wait for Jaxon to arrive. She sat on the couch, her hands coming to rest in her lap. When she realized she was wringing them, she forced herself to stop. It was ridiculous, but she had a case of the nerves. In the back of her mind, a little voice said there was still a chance Jaxon wouldn’t show up. He’d told her more than once he didn’t do relationships. There was more than a slim chance he’d changed his mind overnight. And it wasn’t as if she could have talked to him about it during the day. They hadn’t exchanged phone numbers last night.
Chyna watched the minutes tick by, coming closer to five thirty. To distract herself, she checked on the food cooking in the kitchen. The potatoes were just about done when someone buzzed up to her apartment. A quick look at the clock on the stove showed it was a couple of minutes before half past five.
She left the kitchen and went the entrance door where there was a panel on the wall. She pushed the button to talk. “Hello?”
“It’s me, Jaxon.”
“Come on in.” Chyna pushed the button that would allow Jaxon through the secured door and into the lobby.
She hurried back to the kitchen to turn off the burners, then returned to the apartment door. A knock sounded not long afterward. Chyna opened it and smiled at Jaxon. He looked good enough to eat in a black t-shirt that outlined his strong upper body. His blue jeans hugged him in just the right places.
He held out the bottle of wine. “For you. I brought white since I wasn’t sure what we were having. I figured it would be safer than a red.”
Chyna took the bottle and stepped back to allow Jaxon inside. “Thanks. Dinner will be ready shortly.”
Once he walked into the
