you try again?â She produced another pot, this time with a drooping blade of grass.
As the class watched with interest, Twink placed her hands on the grass and redoubled her efforts, bombarding it with every happy thought she could think of. Sudden laughter made her eyes fly open. Oh, she didnât believe it! The grass had withered until it was dried and brown!
âYou must have something on your mind thatâs keeping you from concentrating,â said Miss Petal, quickly healing it. âNever mind, Twink. You can take notes while I explain the technique; Iâm sure youâll be able to try it out for yourself next time.â
âBut ââ Twink stared in frustration at the now-healthy blade of grass. Though she knew Miss Petal must be right, she could have sworn sheâd performed the spell exactly the same as sheâd always done!
Later at lunch, Sooze regaled the Violet Branch fairies with the story. Even those who had been present in the class were soon howling with laughter.
âAnd then . . . she killed the SECOND one,â finished Sooze, waving her arms dramatically. âKer-plop! Dead! With the sheer power of her thoughts ââ
âSooze, it wasnât dead!â protested Bimi with a smile. âMiss Petal was able to heal it.â
Soozeâs eyes sparkled. âWell, itâs a good thing she was there, with Twink the plant-killer around!â
Twink laughed despite herself. She supposed it was pretty funny â though she still had no idea how sheâd managed to mess up the spell so badly!
Just then Jade, Ivyâs twin sister, stopped by their table. Ivy and Jade both had curly green hair, and looked exactly alike. If it wasnât for their different uniforms, Twink often thought that she couldnât have told them apart at all.
âWhatâs so funny?â Jade asked, taking a seat beside her twin. She lived in Carnation Branch, and wore a frilly pink dress made of carnation petals.
âOh, Jade, you missed it!â giggled Ivy, wiping tears of mirth from her eyes. âGo on, Sooze, tell the story again.â
Sooze grinned, leaning forward.
âNo, Iâll tell it,â groaned Twink, pushing her back. Briefly, she told Jade what had happened.
âOh,â said Sili, blinking. âThat wasnât funny at all, the way you told it.â
âNo, she hasnât got my magic touch with stories,â commented Sooze, taking a bite of seed cake.
Jade was frowning, ignoring the banter. âBut Twink, thatâs really weird,â she said slowly. âThe same thing happened to me in Fairy Dust class today!â
The table fell silent as Jade explained how sheâd tried and tried to do a simple fairy dust spell, but it had gone wrong every time. âFinally Miss Sparkle wouldnât even let me try any more, after I melted a hole in my mushroom desk,â she finished sheepishly.
Everyone burst out laughing. Pix grinned. âYou just need to pay more attention next time, Jade,â she said.
Glancing at her, Twink thought that Pix looked a tiny bit smug. She and Jade were friends, but there was a good-natured rivalry between them to see who could get the best marks.
Jade tapped her wings crossly. âI was paying attention. I knew exactly what I was doing, but I still couldnât make it work. It was like the spell had gone wrong or something.â
âBut Jade, magic isnât like that,â said Pix, sounding maddeningly reasonable. âEither you do it right or you donât, thatâs all.â
âI was doing it right!â insisted Jade. âAnd I thought it was just me, but if the same thing happened to Twink ââ
Pix snorted. âOh, come on, Jade! Isnât it possible that you and Twink just made mistakes?â She spun on her mushroom seat. âTwink, there wasnât anything strange about it, was there? You just made a mistake, thatâs
