know my little friend again.” I leaned in and pressed my lips to his for another kiss.
“Don’t forget to set your alarm,” he said. “I’ll be here at seven.” He dug my shells out of his pockets and handed them to me.
Still dazed from the kisses, I watched as he opened his car door. “See you in the morning.”
I watched him drive away and skipped down the driveway to the porch stairs.
KOLTON
I drove home to find my brother, Kyle, playing one-on-one basketball with our friend, Matt, on the cement slab in front of the garage. My best friend, Rob, slouched in a lawn chair watching, waiting to play the winner.
“Hey,” Rob said, smiling as I walked toward them. His brown hair hung in his eyes, and he had on one of his trademark, vintage t-shirts. This one was a Dr. Pepper t-shirt that said, Trust Me I’m a Dr., on the front. “Getting some new action tonight, huh?” He clucked his tongue and wagged his eyebrows at me, rubbing his hands through his wavy hair that puffed up all over his head.
I laughed. “No. No action. Lauren’s this girl I used to know when we were little. Remember her, Kyle? She lives in a beach house near the hotels and always wore a red and white bathing suit with ladybugs on it.”
Kyle grunted as he went for a lay-up, his t-shirt sweat-soaked. “Yeah, I guess I remember.”
Matt ran over to me, hyper like always, laughing like mad, and wiped his sweaty forehead on my shoulder.
“Dick! Knock it off.” I shoved him.
He shook his head. Beads of sweat flew off his blonde hair toward Rob and I.
“I’ll beat your ass if you don’t stop,” Rob said. “Dude, that’s sick.”
Matt laughed. “Go grab me a towel then. Make yourself useful.” He bounced up and down on his toes.
“Get it yourself,” Rob scoffed, and slouched further down into his chair flicking the ash from his cigarette.
“No action?” Matt said, turning his attention back to me. “Did she at least give you a little somethin’?” He brought his fist up by his mouth, bobbed his head, and stuck his tongue in his cheek. It looked like he was shoving a Popsicle in his mouth.
I pushed him away from me. “Go finish your game and shut the fuck up.”
He laughed and ran back onto the court. “Good thing you’ve got Tabby on speed dial,” he shouted over his shoulder.
Rob threw his head back and howled with laughter. “No shit. Isn’t it about time you two got back together?” He made a show of reading his watch. “I mean, it’s been like a month.”
I ran my hand over my face. They were always busting my balls about Tabby. “No, man, it’s over for good. I don’t want to be with her anymore.”
“You said that last time,” Rob reminded me. “Then she came over and persuaded you to change your mind.”
“Yeah, I know. Okay, I was weak. It won’t happen again. Seriously, I’m done with her. I really like Lauren.”
“Right. Does Lauren know she better give it up soon, like tomorrow, or you’ll be back with your ex?”
I rolled my eyes. “I’m going to bed.”
“Watch out for Tab, I think she’s hiding in your closet waiting to jump you.”
“Fuck off.” I took a step toward the house, and Rob grabbed my arm.
“Hey! Hey, I’m kidding. Don’t bail on us.”
“It’s all good, man.”
Kyle missed a three pointer. “Screw this!” he yelled. “I’m done.”
I nodded toward Kyle. “How is he?”
Rob followed my eyes and shrugged, watching Kyle. “Seems fine tonight. Missing a three pisses me off, too.”
We both watched Kyle huffing around the court for a few seconds until Matt patted him on the back and tucked the ball into his chest. “Shake it off. Let’s go.”
Kyle began to dribble again, and their game resumed.
I exhaled, and rubbed my eyes. “I’m taking Lauren surfing in the morning
