hadn’t wanted to leave, but Kenton explained to him that they were going to Jane Doe his grandma so that her name would never come out, and he had to keep a low profile. And if the press showed up, which was highly likely, they didn’t want his picture taken.
In the end, Jorden took him to his house. By the time they were pulling up in front, not only had Gavin fallen asleep, but Jorden had spoken to Kenton and his mom twice about him. Jorden was glad now that he’d hired himself a staff. The house was fucking huge for a single man, but the kid was going to need someone to cook and clean up after him. Jorden hadn’t the slightest idea what to do with a ten-year-old, but he liked him and figured they could work something out.
Chapter 2
Emma wasn’t positive what to do with all her spare time. And this gardening stuff wasn’t doing anything for her but give her a pounding headache. Going to the garden to see what was in the plot to match the picture books that she was using to figure out what was an herb and what ones were weeds wasn’t helping either. She liked using fresh herbs when she cooked, but who knew they were this much work? When a shadow fell over her, she looked up from her book and smiled at Jorden and Gavin.
“I have to go into town to look at a shipment. It wasn’t supposed to arrive until sometime next week, but it’s here now. So I might be a little late, as there are two boxes of things that I didn’t order. I don’t think.” She nodded to Jorden, who looked out of his element. “Gavin said that he doesn’t mind staying at the house by himself, but I do. Maxwell and Abby are off today, so he’d be really alone in the house. I don’t suppose you could keep an eye on him for me? Just until I can get things squared away for a sitter or something. Do ten year olds need sitters? I have no idea.”
Gavin rolled his eyes but said nothing. She had had the pleasure of talking to him a little last night when they’d gone to Jorden’s house to talk to the young man. He’d been quiet and polite, but he had also been overwhelmed. Emma knew just how he felt. She told Jorden that he could stay with her and not to worry about him.
When Jorden left them, she moved her project to the umbrella table near the garden plot. As much as she wanted to quit, she was determined to name at least four of the weeds or herbs in her garden before she did anything else. Gavin joined her at the table, but still hadn’t said anything.
She had several leaves of the things she had found in the garden spread out in front of her. Three books were stacked up, as well as the open one in front of them. Emma thought she looked like a loon, or like she was going to conduct some kind of cooking experiment that involved a mishmash of everything. When he asked her what she was doing, Emma smiled at him.
“I’m trying my best to figure out if I have to start over in my garden here or if I have what I need for the kitchen. I don’t suppose you know anything about herbs.” He said only what he’d read. “More than I know, then. It’s hard to figure out from a picture what things are, isn’t it? I think this is marjoram, but I’m not sure.”
He touched his fingers to the tiny leaf and took it to his nose. When he sneezed, she laughed and told him that she’d done that a lot over the last few hours. Wendell, the cook, came out with not just tall glasses of iced tea, but a plate of her cookies as well. Emma offered them to Gavin.
“It’s oregano, not marjoram. Can be used for the same dishes, but oregano is stronger and has less of a bite to it.” She set it aside and marked it on her Post-it notes. He picked up the next herb she was clueless about. “Nasturtium. You can eat all of this plant, including the flower and the leaves. Do you suppose that the people coming here for Mom will hurt you guys too?”
Emma paused in writing the name of the plant down and looked at Gavin before speaking. “Yes. I mean,
