remember that! We tolerate you hanging
around!”
I couldn’t even see David now, just a
mass of leather bodies all crowded around him, fists coming up and
then crashing back down with heavy thuds. I was crying now, tears
streaming down my face and I began screaming. “No! No! Stop! Not
like this!”
    Johnny had heard me apparently.
“That’s enough, boys.”
Slowly, the bikers backed away from
David. Bug Brain and Little Sam helped him to his feet, tried to
straighten out his clothes, but he flailed like an embarrassed
child on a temper tantrum to get them to quit touching him. He
looked bad. His faced was all cut up and bloodied, his hair strewn
over the place, and somehow his shirt had ripped at the shoulder
seam.
Johnny pointed at him with a thick
ring-laden finger. “You’re lucky the girl was here,
Davie.”
David spit blood and looked at him
half-angry and half-embarrassed.
Johnny just kept talking. “Now, I
don’t know what you did to her… but you ever show your face here or
bother her again… well, I’m not gonna call off the dogs next time.
You understand that? Oh, and you can forget about your fucking
book. Now get out of here.”
David spit again and then turned and
slinked out of the clubhouse with his tail between his legs. Just
like that, as if someone had snapped their fingers, the atmosphere
in the club went back to normal, as if nothing had even
happened.
    “Coffee’s getting cold, sweetheart.”
It was Bug Brain.
“Yeah, I guess so,” I said. I wiped
the tears from my eyes with my sleeve and spun back around in the
stool, picking up the coffee mug and taking a sip.
Johnny came around the other side of
the bar, pouring his own cup of coffee and leaning against the
counter top facing me.
“Sorry about that. I don’t know what
he did, but I figure it must have been something.”
I nodded. “He probably had that
coming. Just promise me you guys won’t hurt him.”
Big Sam laughed a bellowing laugh. “I
think we already did.”
Johnny tried to get me to ignore him.
“Look… I’m going for a ride after lunch. It’s a nice day out,
should be some good scenery and the fresh air is good. Nothing like
seeing the countryside from the back of a Harley. What do you
say?”
I knew what this meant. Further
involvement with Johnny. This sounded almost like some kind of a
laid back date. Maybe it wasn’t, maybe I was reading him wrong –
but it certainly seemed that way. And I knew what taking him up on
that offer would mean. More time spent around this clubhouse. More
time spent around these men. These men of… dubious morality. I had
just watched them nearly beat my boyfriend to a pulp right in front
of my eyes at the drop of a hat. My boyfriend. No… my ex-boyfriend.
I took a long slow sip of coffee and brushed a stray strand of hair
from my eyes.
    “Yeah. Sure. That sounds
nice.”
