hesitated. âNo.â
Izzy grinned. âSee. Dana believes me.â
âThatâs not what I said,â Dana told her.
âClose enough.â Izzy smiled at her sisters. âWeâve got big-time pressure here. I want Garth in the family fold by Christmas. Then we can all celebrate together.â
âIâm sorry Iâm going to miss that,â Dana said, almost meaning it. Talk about an uncomfortable day.
âYou wonât,â Izzy told her, grinning.
âYouâre the one he tried to kill,â Skye said, speaking for the first time. âYouâre totally sure he wasnât responsible?â
Izzyâs smile faded. She leaned forward and stared into Skyeâs eyes. âI swear. I believe him. Heâs not innocent in this. But he had his reasons for acting against us and heâs our brother. I know down to my soul that bringing him into the family is the only way to stop all this. To make it better.â
âJed will never accept him,â Skye said.
âThis isnât about Jed, itâs about us. Jed has proven again and again that none of us matter to him. But thatâs okay because we have each other. And now we have Garth.â
Skye was quiet for a moment, then nodded slowly. âOkay.â
Izzy jumped to her feet. âI knew youâd understand.â
âMaybe she does, but I donât,â Lexi said. âEven if I accept he didnât try to kill you, which I donât, bigdeal. What about everything else? He still has a lot to answer for.â
Skye nodded. âLexiâs right. We have to be sure. We all have to be sure this isnât a trick. That he hasnât come up with a new strategy. Maybe he wasnât responsible for the explosion. Maybe that was just bad timing or something. But there are other questions that still have to be answered.â
Dana cleared her throat. âTechnically this isnât Garthâs strategy. Itâs Izzyâs. I donât think he wants to be drawn into the family.â
âWhich will make the process even more unpleasant,â Lexi murmured.
âWe have to do this,â Izzy said stubbornly. âWe have to save him.â
âIf heâs worth saving,â Skye said. âHow do we know for sure?â
There was a moment of silence as the women looked at each other. Suddenly Izzy grinned.
âPiss him off,â she announced happily. âIf Iâm right and thereâs a nice guy just waiting to get out, he may be annoyed but he wonât act out. If heâs as horrible as you three think, heâll show his true colors. Stress brings out a personâs real character.â
âSheâs right,â Skye said slowly. âIf we can get in his face, weâll figure him out pretty quickly.â
âWe need to provoke him in an obvious way,â Dana said, moving toward them, liking the idea of annoying Garth.
Skye smiled. âWhat about if one of us shadows him? Two birds with one stoneâeither we catch him being evil to someone else or he reacts to our personal surveillance.â
Lexi nodded. âIf heâs everything Izzy claims, heâll understand. If not, maybe heâll get mad and show us whatâs underneath that tough facade. Itâs a win-win. I like it.â
âI donât,â Izzy said, âbut I see the point of it. So which one of us should it be?â
Dana thought about everything that had happened in the past few months, how scared her friends had been and about Garthâs ruthless actions. She thought about how Jed had ignored his own daughters, virtually leaving them on their own to handle a situation heâd created. She thought of how much each of the Titan sisters meant to her.
âIâll do it,â she said, looking at them. âIâll take a leave of absence and stay on Garth full-time.â
âYou canât,â Skye said.
âSure I can. I
