without even trying. “Are you this shy when you have sex?” The thought of her with other men made him angry for some reason.
“I don’t . . .” She was blushing.
He moved closer to her. “You don’t have sex? Have you ever had sex before?”
She shook her head. “After what Kilian did, I didn’t want to let a man have that kind of power over me ever again.”
He touched her cheek, feeling her shiver at his closeness. “You said he didn’t rape you.”
“He touched me, hurt me. I didn’t like it. I panic when men are close to me.”
“I’m close. Do I make you scared?”
“No, my wolf seems to like you.”
He blinked. He had surely heard her wrong. “Your wolf?”
“I can’t shift, but I still have a wolf inside of me. I have strength just like any other werewolf. I’m not weak.”
“I never said that.”
“Yes, you did, you said I wasn’t even a real werewolf.”
Shit, he had said that. “I’m sorry . . .”
“Doesn’t matter. I’ve heard shit like that my whole life. What I don’t understand is why I am considered less when I have powers that real werewolves don’t have, I just can’t shift.”
He had never thought of it like that. “I’ve never met a soothsayer before and clearly I don’t know shit. Tell me about them, about you.”
“There’s not that many of us left and werewolves outside the council don’t have much use for us.” She sat down on the bed and he gave her space to feel comfortable.
“A long time ago, there used to be thousands of soothsayers spread all over the world in different packs. We used to be considered valuable back then. When I first went to live at the commune, I was devastated to find out that our numbers had been reduced to a mere hundred. None of the packs wanted soothsayers mixing with their real werewolves.”
“What happened to all the soothsayers?” This was a side of the history of his people that he had no clue about.
“Selfishness, greed, or fear. All soothsayers have the ability to see glimpses of the future; their abilities vary from person to person depending on their Romany heritage. Some are more powerful than others and have different sets of talents.
“About four hundred years ago, the lead soothsayer in each district informed the pack alphas and council that werewolves were now greatly outnumbered by humans, and the humans were spreading out to populate more areas. Werewolves would no longer be able to keep to themselves has they had in the past. Soon it would be inevitable that werewolves and humans would live among one another. It was a future reality that they needed to embrace.
“Back then, the thought of werewolves mating with humans was unheard of. It went completely against the old laws. The soothsayers’ message was not well received. The council demanded that the soothsayers give them a different premonition.” She swallowed.
He reached into his bag and pulled out a bottle of water for her.
“Thank you.”
“I take it that the soothsayers can’t change the premonitions.”
She shook her head. “That’s not how it works. We can tell what we see, but it is for the person who hears the premonition to change the future, if they can.”
“So the council didn’t like the premonition. What happened next?”
“The lead soothsayers feared for the safety of our kind and decided to call their own council to discuss leaving the packs.”
“Let me guess, putting so many of the most valuable females in one place wasn’t a wise decision?”
“No, it was a massacre. Over half of the soothsayers that came for the meeting were killed. None of the werewolf packs came to their defense. The council felt responsible for what happened and ordered all the soothsayers to be moved to a secret commune. A coven of witches was hired to cast a spell to keep the commune hidden and protected. Only key members of the council had access to the commune.”
“Your numbers went down even after going to the
