âwhat about something really simple? Like the Dots?â
âHey, I like it,â Zola says. âDo you think itâs too simple, though?â
Abigail smiles. âThe Dots. No. Itâs easy to remember, and thatâs good.â
âYeah, I like it too,â I say. âHere, let me try it out. Ladies and gentlemen, for this yearâs Spring Fling, Iâm pleased to introduce to you a band thatâs as fun as their nameâthe Dots!â
Abigail and Zola clap and cheer. It makes me laugh.
After we calm down, I say, âSo now that our name is settled, do you guys want to compete in the auditions coming up in a few weeks?â
âYes,â they say at the exact same time.
âBut shouldnât we perform an original song?â I ask.
Abigail pulls a crumpled piece of paper out of her back pocket. âWell, Iâve been working on something. We can try it out, if you want to.â
âIs it a cupcake song?â I ask.
She shakes her head. âNo, it isnât. Lily, you are the one who got us into that mess, so I think youâre the one who gets to work on a cupcake song.â
Zola looks at us like we are crazy. âDudes, what are you talking about?â
âLily promised the New Pirates that if weâre chosen to play at the Spring Fling,â Abigail explains, âweâll play a cupcake song theyâll love.â
âDonât forget the dance,â I say, cringing. âThat was your idea, Abigail.â
âSorry, Lily. If you write the song, I think it makes sense you come up with the dance too,â Abigail says.
âSo whatâs the song called youâve been working on?â Zola asks.
âââWishing.â Here, Iâll play a little bit for you.â
Abigail puts the piece of paper on the music stand in front of her and then strums her guitar and starts to sing.
âI blew on the dandelion, and watched the wishes fly.
Some fell to the ground while others floated high.
Maybe life is hard sometimes, but thatâs just how it goes.
If we hope and if we wish, life might change, who knows.â
She stops playing. âThatâs all Iâve got. Sorry. I need to work on the chorus. Maybe you guys can help me?â
âAbigail, thatâs really good,â I say. âIf we can finish it and then practice like crazy the next couple of weeks, we might have a chance at winning that audition.â
âCan you play it from the top?â Zola asks, which sounds so professional and like weâre really a band.
Thatâs when it hits me, and I want to squeal and jump around because Iâm in a real band and we have a name and we might even have a song!
Iâm so excited, but I tell myself to calm down because there is still a lot of work to do. Before weâre able to get too far into the song, someone knocks on the studio door. I open the door just enough to peek out and see my mom standing there.
âSorry to bother you,â she says. Sheâs holding a piece of paper with a phone number written on it. âIsabel just called and I thought you might want to call her back before it gets too late. She said it was important, and she didnât have your cell number, so she called the house.â
âWeâre right in the middle of something,â I tell her as I take the piece of paper. âIâll have to wait and call her in a little while.â
Mom nods. âWell, if you girls want to take a break pretty soon, I bought some peanut-butter cookies at the store. Theyâre really good.â
âOkay. Thanks.â
I shut the door and go back to the band. Not just any band. My bandâthe Dots!

W e manage to get some more lyrics written to our song, though itâs still not finished. I sing while the girls play the instruments, and we donât sound half-bad. We donât sound great yet
