want to know. I’m really sorry about your mom. I know this has to be hard.” Eric pulled Tom in for a hug. He tightened his arms and wouldn’t let go.
He knew he was getting attached too fast, but that was what he did. It had taken two days before he had had Abi convinced that they should be together forever. She’d fought him a bit then and still fought him now, but he knew in his heart they belonged together. Now maybe—just maybe—they could get Tom to stay. Or to at least come back.
Things were too new and fresh for Tom right now. Maybe he was using them as a way to feel alive, but he’d take that for now, if he could convince Tom to come back. See if what they had in the sack could lead to more, then maybe Abi would stop fussing about and they could settle down.
“Hey! Where is everyone? Whose car is that outside?”
Chapter Seven
Tommy jumped off the bed for the second time. His world was messed up and his head wasn’t on right. He’d just rushed into a sexual experience because of a hot flare of lust. He’d called his base to extend his stay, basically for a booty call. Not that it wasn’t the best sexual experience of his life, but his mom had just died and now it looked as though he was about to meet his dad for the first time.
He was naked in a room with two other naked people. Not that he was ashamed, but he needed to have some sort of armor. Fuck . Tommy scrambled around and found a pair of pants. He was struggling to fit his leg into them when he realized they weren’t his. He threw them on the bed and grabbed another pair. Clothes were everywhere.
Eric hugged him from behind. “It’ll be okay. Take a breath. I’ll go out first and let him know he has a guest. Abi can follow after. No reason to panic.”
“I’m not panicking. Well, not much. Fuck. Why do I care? I didn’t care earlier.”
“Because this is a big deal.” Abi was there now too, her arms wrapped around his middle.
They were a comfort he hadn’t known he needed. He let himself relax into Abi’s strong arms.
Eric let him go and moved toward the door.
“How the fuck did you get dressed so fast?” Tommy laughed.
“The horses are getting ready to foal. You learn to hustle.” Eric winked and left the room.
Tommy was still only in his jeans, hadn’t even buttoned them, and there was Abi, just about dressed too. She was soothing a hand down her curls. She kissed his cheek and left the room. He finished dressing and sat back down. The room smelled of sex. Like Abi and Eric. What was he doing? He needed to get out of the house. Go back to what was familiar to him. Not be here at the ranch he should have grown up in, meeting the man who’d helped bring him into the world—especially now that his mother was dead. And why hadn’t she told him that she had been in contact with Dan? Shouldn’t he have known? Didn’t Dan want to meet him?
That could’ve been what had happened. Maybe his mom had been trying to fix something that should’ve been left alone. He didn’t want to go out there, but he was putting off something and it wasn’t like him.
He’d face his father like he’d faced everything in his life. Head on. He rose from the bed and squared his shoulders, as if he was going into a battle that could end in disaster.
Tommy followed the soft murmur of voices. He entered the kitchen and got to look at Dan before anyone knew he was there. His father was built much like he was. Tall and strong, even with the gray hair. He had a cowboy hat in one hand and his other slid through his hair—something Tommy had done for as long as he could remember when he was nervous. He caught himself before he did the same thing. He swallowed the lump in his throat. This was harder than he had thought it would be. God. He wanted to hate the man standing in that kitchen, but Dan looked…sad. Had Abi told him about Tommy’s mom?
He didn’t think she would have, but he really didn’t know her yet. Did he want to
