bottles. Both held water. The twins took the offerings in their chubby little hands, and as they began sucking on the nipples, they settled down.
Ms. Brown said, âOnce they get out of those seats, theyâll probably be a lot more comfortable.â
Bobby noted her smile and the way she watched the twins. Maybe this would all work out after allâÂif they didnât freeze to death.
When they exited the highway onto a dirt road, Bobby saw more fenced, snow-Âcovered fields. Some small houses were set back from the road, with a lone truck or two parked nearby, but there werenât any businesses in sight. None. Were it not for the houses, heâd think the area was totally unpopulated.
âWhere are we?â Kiki asked, peering through her window. She sounded as confused as Bobby felt.
âAlmost home,â Crystal offered reassuringly.
âYour townâs bigger, right?â
âNot really,â Ms. Brown answered. âWe have a subdivision and a few buildings on our main street, but the rest of the areaâs just like this.â
Bobby sat back. This was where theyâd be living? This desolate stretch of snow-Âcovered nothingness? He and Kiki shared a look. He wished they were alone so they could talk, but for now, all they could do was wait and see what the rest of the day might bring.
A short while later they drove up a cleared driveway. Bobby saw an older home up ahead, but Nathan steered onto another dirt road. Bobby looked around. There were four trailers spread out over a large expanse of land. They stopped in front of one of the four.
âHere we are,â Ms. Brown said.
Although the exterior was nicer than heâd been expecting, he worried about furniture and appliances and how he was going to afford themâÂall things heâd thought about when he and Kiki initially accepted Ms. Brownâs invitation. Heâd mentally buried the concerns beneath the excitement tied to moving. Now, the worries were back.
Nathan took their suitcase out of the trunk and handed it to Bobby with a smile. Shivering in the frosty air, they stood waiting while Ms. Brown unlocked the door, and then followed her inside.
Stunned, Bobby stared around. The interior was fully furnished. The walls were a creamy vanilla, the carpet a bit darker. The kitchen had what appeared to be all new stainless appliances.
âOh, my goodness!â Kiki whispered. She looked both confused and amazed.
âMs. Brown, I appreciate you bringing us out here,â Bobby said. âBut Kiki and I canât afford a place like this.â
âSure you can,â she contradicted gently. âRentâs free for the first year, and my office will handle the utilities. So take off your coats, get the babies out of those seats and snowsuits, and let me give you the tour.â
He met her eyes. He was sure she saw the emotion glistening in his, but she didnât call him out on it or belittle him. She simply said, âWelcome home.â
After theyâd left Bobby and Kiki at the trailer, Nathan drove Bernadine and Crystal back to town. Bernadine was admittedly impressed by the young Âcouple. From what Crystal had initially told her about who they were and the struggles they were having, sheâd been expecting less polish, for lack of a better word, but they were both well-Âmannered and polite. Kelly was about Crystalâs size. Her skin was a few shades brighter and her face dusted with freckles. Sheâd been wearing a skirt, boots, and a red turtleneck faded by too many washings, but everything she had on was clean. Her hair was her ownâÂno weaveâÂand pulled back into a simple ponytail. Bobby had dark skin, and at his size could easily be playing linebacker for the Chiefs. Sheâd noted the suit. It wasnât new by any means, but the fact that heâd worn one at all said a lot about how he was approaching this new adventure. She found
