tell her not to tell Bree?â Arnie dropped onto his back again.
Bobby nodded again. He searched for the Wadesâ phone number in the Shadyside High directory he kept by the phone. âTwo Wades in one weekend,â he muttered, moving his finger down the column of names and numbers. âThatâs the challenge. And I accept the challenge.â
âYou the Man!â Arnie proclaimed. âYou the Man!â
Bobby punched in the number, then pressed the phone to his ear.
âWhat if Bree answers?â Arnie demanded. âWhat if Bree answers and you think itâs Samantha?â
âHey, I can tell them apart,â Bobby declared. He raised a finger to his lips, signaling Arnie to be silent.
The phone rang twice. Then a girlâs voice on the other end said hello.
Bobby cleared his throat. âHelloâSamantha?â
chapter 5
âDo You Think Iâd Do That to My Sister?â
â
Y es, this is Samantha. Whoâs this?â
âHi, Samantha. Itâs Bobby Newkirk.â
âOh. Hi!â She sounded very surprised. âBree and I were just talking about you.â
Bobbyâs smile faded. âOh. Is she there? In the room with you?â
âNo. Bree is downstairs. Want me to get her?â
âNo!â Bobby replied quickly. âI wanted to talk to
you,
actually.â
âMe?â Her voice wasnât soft and velvety like Breeâs. Samantha spoke loudly, Bobby knew.
âBree said you might be interested in singing with our band,â Bobby said, smiling over at Arnie.
Arnie, sprawled on his back on the bed, flashed him an a-okay sign for encouragement.
Samantha laughed scornfully. âMe? Sing with a band? Youâre kidding!â
âWant to try?â Bobby asked.
âNo way!â Samantha cried. âWhy would Bree
say
that?â
Bobby chuckled. âI donât know. But thatâs what she told me.â
âWeird,â Samantha said. âWellâno thanks. I sound good only in a big group. Or in the shower.â
They both laughed.
Arnie sat up, listening intently to Bobbyâs side of the conversation.
âYou busy Saturday night?â Bobby asked casually.
Silence at the other end. He could imagine the stunned expression on her face.
âWant to go to a movie? You know. At the Tenplex?â
More silence. Then finally, Samantha replied in a hushed tone just above a whisper. âBut, Bobby, you asked my sister out for the night before.â
âYeah, I know,â Bobby replied.
He could hear her short, rapid breathing on the other end. He knew she expected him to say more. So he didnât.
âI donât think Bree would like it if I went out with you the next night,â Samantha said, speaking thoughtfully.
âShe doesnât have to know about it,â Bobby suggested, his voice steady and low. He listened to her breathing, trying to determine what her reaction was.
âIs this a dare or a bet or something?â she demanded angrily. âDid someone dare you to go out with us both? Is that it?â
âNo. No way!â Bobby insisted. âIâve been thinkingabout you. I mean, I see you in homeroom, and I thoughtââ
âItâs not a dare?â she demanded suspiciously.
âNo. No way. I swear, Samantha.â
A long silence. Bobby waited patiently, his eyes on Arnie.
Sheâs going to say yes, he told himself. Sheâs hot for me and she knows it. She is
stoked.
Sheâs no different from all the other girls at school. She wants to go out with Bobby the Man.
âBobby,â she said finally, âdo you really think Iâd do that to my sister?â
âSure you would,â Bobby urged. âSure you would. You
know
youâre dying to go out with meâright?â
âYouâre really conceited,â she replied.
âYeah, I know,â Bobby told her. âItâs my best
