chosen by a class vote,âGeorge said. âJuliana didnât have any say in the selection.â
âThat might not make any difference to Mrs. Nardo,â Bess said. âCriminals always believe what they want to believe.â
âWell, should we start by questioning Mrs. Nardo?â George asked.
Nancy shook her head. âAs much as I hate to say it, I think we should start with Amanda,â she said. âSheâs shown us a side of her weâve never seen before.â
Bess and George nodded.
âAmanda has really been pushy about her ONITAP designs,â Bess said. âMaybe she decided that if her designs werenât going to be part of the fashion show, then
nobodyâs
designs were!â
âIt certainly looks that way,â Nancy said.
George shook her head in disbelief. âWho would ever have thought that Amanda Johnson was a criminal?â she said.
âWell, we donât know that for sure, George,â Nancy said. âIâll admit that the evidence certainlypoints in her direction, but we need to keep an open mind.â
âNancyâs right,â Bess said.
âSorry,â George said. She sighed. âItâs just that the fashion show is so important to our school that I canât believe any of our classmates would try to destroy it.â
Since it was still light out, the girls got permission to go to Amandaâs house on their bicycles. When they got there, Amanda and her mother were just getting out of their car.
âHey, Nancy, Bess, George!â Amanda shouted. âWhat brings you here?â
âThatâs the friendliest sheâs sounded in a couple weeks,â Bess whispered.
âWe just wanted to talk to you about something, if you have the time,â Nancy said.
Amanda turned to her mother. âDo you need help with the bags?â she asked.
âNo, sweetheart, thatâs fine,â Mrs. Johnson said. âAsk your father to come out. You run along and visit with your friends.â
Nancy, Bess, and George followed Amanda inside. Amanda gave her father a hug, told him that her mom wanted his help bringing in the groceries, and then led the way to her room.
âSit anywhere thatâs comfortable,â Amanda said as she fell onto her bed. âWhatâs up?â
Nancy sat down in a purple canvas sling chair. âYouâve been acting kind of weird in art class lately,â she said. âWhatâs up with you?â
Amanda blushed. âWell, itâs just that, uh, well â¦â
âWeâre sorry your ONITAP designs werenât chosen,â Bess said.
âBut where did that name come from?â George asked. âItâs kind of strange.â
âWell, it, uh, just sort of came to me,â
Amanda said, âyou know, like a vision, something like that.â
âAmanda, are you trying to destroy the fashion show?â Bess asked.
âNo! Of course not!â Amanda said. She let out a long sigh. âI was just doing Peter a favor.â
âPeter?â Nancy said. âPeter Patino?â
Amanda nodded. âIâm surprised nobody figured it out,â she said. ââONITAPâ is âPatinoâ spelled backward.â
Nancy looked embarrassed. âYouâre right,â she said. âWe should have figured that out.â
âI donât understand,â George said.
âPeter has always wanted to be a fashion designer,â Amanda explained, âbut he was too embarrassed to let people know.â
âThatâs silly,â Bess said.
âIt sure is,â George agreed.
âDo you think Peter is trying to destroy the fashion show?â Nancy asked.
âNo way,â Amanda said. âHe plans to show his designs to all the people whoâll be there.â
âWell, we can cross you off our suspect list,â Nancy said.
âWe didnât want you to be guilty,
