just want to see whether he’s settled in.’
    ‘What about your work?’
    ‘I’ll do it later.’
‘All right, but don’t be too long.’
Changing into her short skirt, Desiree caught sight of her reflection in the mirror. Eyeing her naked thighs, her shapely legs, she recalled Tony’s words. Don’t mess me about, OK? The last thing she wanted to do was mess him about. If he made a move, if he kissed her and ran his fingers up her thigh…She was bound to make a fool of herself, she knew as she pulled her T-shirt over her head. Her inexperience would show and Tony would probably decide that she was too young for him. All she could do was play it by ear.
‘I won’t be long,’ she called, bounding down the stairs.
‘Are you wearing a bra?’ her mother asked her, emerging from the kitchen and gazing at her daughter’s nipples clearly defined by her tight T-shirt.
‘Of course I am,’ Desiree replied indignantly. ‘For God’s sake, Mum.’
    ‘I’m sorry, I just thought…’
    ‘Just thought what?’
‘Nothing. I’ll see you in a while.’
Watching the girl leave the house, Belinda wrung her hands and bit her lip. Although Tony had reassured her, said that Desiree was far too young for him, Belinda was uncertain. Desiree was an extremely attractive girl, and Tony was a red-blooded male. All she could do was hope that he’d been honest when he’d said that they were friends and nothing more. Flopping onto the lounge sofa, she glanced at her watch. Five o’clock. Perhaps Desiree would only be ten minutes or so.

‘I’m almost finished,’ Tony said, dumping the vacuum cleaner in the under-stairs cupboard. ‘It’s taken me all day, but I’m almost there.’
‘The place looks lovely,’ Desiree said, following him into the lounge. ‘Where did they come from?’ she asked him, gazing at a huge bunch of flowers on the window sill. ‘Did a girl send them?’
    ‘A woman,’ he replied.
‘Oh, I see. Have you known her long?’
‘All my life,’ he said with a chuckle. ‘Desiree, my mother sent them.’
‘Oh, right.’ Feeling stupid, Desiree sat on the sofa and crossed her long legs. ‘What did my mum say when you were in the garden last night? Did she talk about me?’
‘She talked about the weather, the house, the garden…Nothing of importance. I’m going to have a glass of wine. Are you going to join me?’
    ‘Er…Yes, yes, I will.’
‘Had a good day at college?’ he called, as he grabbed a bottle of wine from the fridge.
‘Not bad,’ she replied, wondering whether alcohol was a good idea as he placed two glasses on the coffee table. ‘Pretty boring, really. When will you go back to work?’
‘I’m back tomorrow. I’m off to Ireland for a couple of days.’
‘You’re going away?’ She sighed dolefully.
‘Belfast. There’s a computer network problem…I won’t bore you with that.’
‘How often do you have to go away?’
‘During the last six months, I’ve been out of the country most of the time. Things are hectic at the moment.’
‘So I…I won’t be seeing much of you?’
‘Probably not. We’ll have to make the most of our time together.’
Feeling despondent as she sipped her wine, Desiree was sure that a romantic relationship with Tony would never develop. How could it? she pondered. He’d be working away most of the time and…and she’d rebuffed him when he’d made an advance. As he sat next to her on the sofa and placed his hand on her knee, she knew that she’d have to allow him to fondle her. If she wanted a chance of a relationship, she’d at least have to allow him to touch her.
‘I’m sorry about last night,’ Tony said. ‘You must have thought me pretty unreasonable?’
    ‘No, no.’
    ‘It’s just that you’re such a beautiful girl. I couldn’t help myself.’
‘You don’t have to apologise,’ she replied, smiling at him. ‘It was my fault. I’ve never had a boyfriend. I’ve never had sex and I
