wasnât too shook up by this news, but she wasnât. â Her father married for his second wife the proudest and unkindest woman that ever was seen.â Now why would a dad marry someone like that? He has a kid, for heavenâs sake; youâd think he would be very, extremely careful who he brought home. That makes me wonder why Erin isnât worried about a wicked stepmother too. That should be my first question for her.
I wrote QUESTIONS: really big at the top of the next page in the notebook and then:
1) What about a wicked stepmother?
I kept reading. â She had two daughters who were exactly like her in every way.â
Tess pointed to a picture of the wicked stepmother and her daughters arriving at Cinderellaâs house. The stepsisters had brought tons of chests that were all piled up on top of the carriage. Frilly clothes and sparkly jewels and high-heeled shoes with curlicue toes were all spilling out.
âMessy,â Tess said.
âYes, sir.â I wrote on the QUESTIONS page:
2) Are they messy?
3) Do they have lots of luggage?
We kept reading and I kept adding to my list of questions: Are they loud and bossy? Are they lazy and sleep a ton? Do they stare in the mirror a lot? Do they have lots of clothes? Do they have big feet?
âI think thatâs a pretty good list of wicked stepsister questions,â I said when we got to the end of the story.
âMore,â said Tess.
âMore questions?â I asked.
âMore reading,â said Tess.
I sighed a big sigh, but Iâm not sure why because I like reading fairy tales and I like Tess too, most of the time.
Chapter 6
Flip-flops
âW hat about your wicked stepmother?â I asked Erin the minute we got our first recess the next morning.
âWhat wicked stepmother?â she asked.
âThe one that comes with the wicked stepsisters,â I said.
âThey come with a stepfather.â
âIs he wicked?â
âHeâs okay, I guess,â she said.
I followed Erin over to a bench and showed her my notebook.
âWhatâs that?â she asked.
âA WICKED STEPSISTERS NOTEBOOK ,â I said.
âWhere did you get it?â
âI made it.â I fished the pencil out from the metal spirals and opened to the first page. âI have some questions for you.â
âOkay,â she said.
âWhat can you tell me about your wicked stepsisters?â
âNot much,â she said. âI havenât met them yet.â
âWhy not?â I asked.
âIâm not going to meet them until right before the wedding.â
âThat seems a little fishy.â
âIt does?â she asked.
âYes,â I said. âMaybe your stepfather is very, extremely ashamed of them.â
âMaybe,â said Erin. âBut I think itâs just because theyâre away at college.â
âHmm,â I said, âso
theyâre a lot older and
bigger than you.â
âI guess so,â she said. âWhat are your stepsisters like?â
My heart dropped a little bit inside me. âI actually donât have any.â
Erin stared hard at me.
âThatâs not why Iâm called Cinderella,â I said, and then got all nervous about what would happen next.
âSo you canât help,â she said.
âYes, I can,â I said. âEven though I donât have stepsisters, I can still help you find out if yours are wicked or not.â
âOf course theyâre wicked,â said Erin.
âBut you havenât met them yet, so how do you know?â I asked.
âBecause all stepsisters are wicked,â she said.
âNo, theyâre not,â I said very sure, even though I wasnât so sure really.
Her forehead crinkled into one big frown and she opened her mouth to say something, but Rosemary T. appeared right by the bench just then.
âWhat are you two doing?â she asked. She didnât
