leaping onto horses and galloping toward Night Digger Point Beach right now.
But Jonah reined them both in. âTell me why youâre so sure itâs not some other colt,â he asked.
âHis eyes are blue,â Darby said, âand his coat is creamy white. Oh, and his nose is pink,â Darby added, recalling how the colt had looked up to study her.
âCremellos have pink skin,â Cathy said, ânot black, like white Andalusians and Arabs.â
âToo fancy for me,â Jonah scoffed, but Darby saw a slow smile lift one side of his black mustache. Then her grandfather laughed out loud. âGood. Sounds like weâll be keeping that money in the family.â
âAnd you say you know where he is?â Aunty Cathy sounded cautious.
âWhy didnât you bring the colt in?â Jonah asked.
âI know where he was ,â Darby explained.
âTango will find him!â Megan interrupted.
That was a great idea, Darby thought. Meganâs rose roan mare would have perfect instincts for the task. Tango had been a wild horse, then a captive one. Sheâd been trained, then freed by an accident, and now she was home again.
But Jonah hadnât gotten that far in the plan. âYou say Kimoâs out looking for him right now,â Jonah mused.
âI would have kept searching with him, but he told me Aunty Cathy wanted me to try on my gym clothes,â Darby said as Aunty Cathy walked, smiling, toward the kitchen.
âGym clothes!â Megan shook her head in disbelief, and then she was on her feet, practically dancing as she slung an arm around Darbyâs shoulders.
âIf Kimo doesnât find him, Darbyâmy old buddy, old palâIâll help you. And weâll split the money!â
âDinnerâs ready,â Aunty Cathy called.
âMom!â Megan yelled at the wall between the living room and kitchen. âWeâve got to go find Stormbird!â
âKimo will bring him, if heâs out there,â Aunty Cathy shouted back.
Darby couldnât help looking at Jonah.
âI know itâs him,â Darby persisted. âHeâs the right age and everything.â
âAnd how many white colts with blue eyes are out wandering around alone?â Megan asked Jonah, then wheeled on Darby. âHe was by himself, right?â
âYes,â Darby said. âAnd lonesome, too. He wanted to play with Navigator.â
Aunty Cathy returned. Carrying a platter loaded with food, she sidled in between the two girls and indicated that they should follow her to the table on the lanai.
âPineapple chicken with sticky rice, stir-fried red and yellow peppers, broccoli, andââ
âMom, weâve got to go right now!â
âItâs dinnertime.â
âSo?â Meganâs gestures were huge with frustration, and Darby could see Jonahâs amusement. âIâll be able to buy you dinner every night for a month, two monthsââ
âSimmer down, Megan,â Aunty Cathy said. âIt will be dark soon.â
Meganâs eyes beseeched Darby to help, and Darby would have, except that Aunty Cathy caught Meganâs silent plea for reinforcements. She pointed at Jonah and Darby, and snapped, âYou two, sit down.â
Darby did as she was told. Jonah pretended to flinch, then settled at his place.
âYou knew about this,â Aunty Cathy said to Jonah as he began to eat.
âAbout the colt and reward,â he admitted. âBut I never guessed he was alive. Or nearby.â
Darby ate, but her right foot jiggled back and forth with barely controlled energy. She was glad noone could see, because she couldnât seem to stop it.
âBabe was going to offer a week at the resort, instead of money,â Jonah told them. âBut sheâs afraidâ¦How did she put it? That âsomeone unsavory might win.ââ
Aunty Cathy put down her fork and sat back in
