himself.
"Is
this okay for you?" He asked.
"Well,
I was hoping for something a little more along the lines of maybe like In-N-Out
Burger for our first dinner. But Morton's steakhouse will just have to do,"
I said teasingly.
He
smiled as he took his napkin and placed it in his lap. Feigning a foreign
accent he said, "This In-N-Out Burger you speak of, what kind of place is
this?"
"I
tell you what, how about you get this dinner time and I'll take you out to In-N-Out
Burger next time. It's on me." I squeezed his hand.
In
his own beautiful voice he said to me with a smile, "Whether we dine here,
in San Francisco, in Paris, or even at the local In-N-Out Burger, it will
always be on me."
Oh my God, this man is amazing , is all I could think about. He was
either the best player I've ever run into or the type of man my heart had been
longing for, for years. The amazing part was getting to me as my concern about
him being a player and more specifically if he was engaged or not was beginning
to creep back up into my thoughts. I had this huge lump in my throat and I
needed to express it.
"So,
I have a question for you," I said as I took a sip of water.
"What
would you like to know?"
"Well,
I have really enjoyed this last, not even a full day with you, but I am a
little concerned about something." He looked at me intently. I was so
hesitant to ask him this question, as I didn't want the answer to ruin our
night. "I'm not sure…."
Just
as I was about to ask the question, a couple approached from the side.
"Michael!"
Called a man dressed in a black suit with a young, beautiful woman on his arm.
Michael
stood to greet him. "Charles, so good to see you. What brings you to
Sacramento?"
"You
know, same old song and dance here in California's state capital. Business here
in Sac and pleasure down in L.A." He laughed.
It
looked like Charles was getting a little pleasure here in northern California
as well. I had a pretty good feeling that the woman on his arm was not his wife
or girlfriend but someone he had rendezvoused with here on his business trip. She
was just a little too taken to Charles, as she was nearly hanging off his arm
in her very mini dress, five inch heels and tipsier than I was yesterday.
"When
are you going to come down to L.A. for a little pleasure?" Winked Charles
as he tapped Michael’s arm with his fist playfully. Michael seemed to ignore
Charles' try at barroom masculine bonding and instead stuck out his hand to the
woman, "Hello, I'm Michael Cinder."
She
took his hand and giggled. She was most definitely enamored with Michael. Who
wouldn't be? A pang of jealousy singed my heart.
Charles'
eyes made a beeline for me, "Well, who is this lovely lady, Michael?"
Turning
towards me he said, "This is Ms. Davis."
"Hello,"
Charles said as he reached out his hand to me while the woman on his arm gave
me a little bit of a dagger look from behind him. "Is she a colleague or
friend?" Charles asked Michael as he took my hand and kissed it.
Michael
didn't respond and instead avoided the question. "Charles, it is so good
to see you again. Let's do golf sometime. Just give my secretary a call and let
me know when you will be in town next." Charles retreated from my hand and
took Michael's hand in his shaking it firmly.
"It's
always a pleasure, Michael," he said as he turned with his date and walked
away. The lump in my throat had turned into more of a pothole in my stomach as
Michael sat back down at our table.
"So,
what would you like to eat?" He asked as he picked up the menu. "They
have some of the best options for wine in all of Sacramento here at Morton's."
I
didn't answer him as I clenched my teeth. I was trying to hold back the anger
that was beginning to build up inside. I
should have known not to go in that limo ! I screamed to myself inside. Why do you keep doing this to yourself? He's
already taken.
" Katie, are you okay?" He asked as he touched my arm.
Before
I could even stop the words and emotion from
