He connected with Alison by 7:00 p.m. each evening. Occasionally he called and went by her office to get her for a quick lunch date, sometimes from the hot dog vendor on the corner; other times, Japanese fast food in the next block. He invited her to court a couple of times so that she could see the trial, which she enjoyed.

He was masterful in the courtroom, an orator of the first order, with a calming presence that was appreciated by the jurors. She watched them watch him and it was very enlightening.

Some nights they stayed in his hotel room, mostly because he had materials to review and didn’t want to drag his computer to her house, which was fine with her. As often as possible, they spent the night at her house, which they both enjoyed. Alison was struck by how virile he was, that no matter how busy he’d been or how tired he was from court that day, it didn’t keep him from wanting to make love with her.

As the month of December moved by more quickly, approaching Christmas, Rick talked about the trial coming to an end and mentioned to Alison that he was taking his children to visit his parents for the Christmas week. There was no invitation expressed to her, but she really didn’t expect one. Some how she believed the time would work for them and then they could talk about how to move forward.

Suddenly it was December 23rd and Rick was checking out of the hotel, the trial over, his victory very sweet on many levels – financially, emotionally, and certainly for his career. The local papers were full of the recount of the trial and the decision in favor of the plaintiff, his client, writers noting his masterful handling of the trial and witnesses. The Boston papers were also filled with accolades for Rick, and lost in that was that he had been the trial lawyer with a San Francisco partner.

He and Alison had agreed that he would spend his last night at her place. She wanted to make a very nice dinner and enjoy the tranquility, knowing that early the next morning he would be on his way back to Boston. She was already dreading his departure, but it was inevitable. She’d bought him a gift and hoped he would not feel put upon as she expected nothing from him.

But he surprised her with beautiful diamond earrings, small, an artistic shape “a” that were very unusual. She knew he had put a lot of effort into that gift, so it made her feel good that she had bought him something, too. It was a pen set in cobalt blue with his initials engraved in gold, lovelier than anything she’d ever seen. He was deeply touched and surprised.

They enjoyed the wonderful dinner Alison prepared and made love most of the night, sleeping only intermittently. And then he was at the door ready to leave.

“I love you. I will miss you terribly. As soon as the holiday week is over, we’ll talk about how to cut out these 3000 miles between us, okay?”

“Yes, okay. Enjoy your time with your family. They are important. I love you, too, and I will miss you terribly.”

Alison reached up for one last hug, to smell his smell again, wishing she could bottle it.

He waived goodbye from the taxi and then he was gone. But Alison felt no self pity, knew that she would enjoy the rest of the season and look forward to what they would plan after the New Year. Somehow, in the back of her mind, she even thought that perhaps she would wind up moving to Boston, a city she loved almost as much as San Francisco.

Chapter Five
The first thing Alison had to do after getting her house in order again both literally and figuratively was to connect with her friends, all of whom she’d neglected badly for a month, especially Brenda.

Shortly after she arrived at her office the next morning, only to give her staff their Christmas gifts, a package was delivered from Saks Fifth Avenue. Alison knew it was from Rick and decided to open it at home rather than in the office. This was time to be with
