guys, but we have to figure out what we’re gonna do here,” Anthony Carter said from his seat at the large table. “We have to figure out who did this.”
“You know who did it, Ant,” Michael snapped. “It’s the other family. I guarantee it.”
“We don’t know that for sure, Mikey” Kelvin’s Uncle Clarence, chimed in. He was sitting at the table with a large, unlit cigar in his hand, and even though his t-shirt was at least an XXL, the sleeves were struggling to cover his massive arms. As usual, he looked pissed. “We don’t know that it was them, so let’s not jump to any conclusions. It’s been months since we’ve heard anything from them.”
“We don’t have beef with anybody else in this city,” Michael said. “The shit between Kelvin Senior and Ivan is still unresolved itself. Not to mention the fact that Ivan is pissed that Junior ordered the hit on his son. You think the Russians are gonna just let that shit go? Not a chance in hell.”
“Well, we don’t have any goddamn proof, Mikey. So until we do, we can’t retaliate,” Clarence said.
I lifted my head off of Kelvin’s chest and looked over at the table of Carters.
“What? Retaliate? What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, my voice still trembling.
Nobody in the room answered, they just looked at me, and then looked at each other.
“Are you talking about hurting people?” I looked up at Kelvin who had an apprehensive look on his face as he stared down at the thick blue carpet. “Tony is already dead. We don’t need anybody else getting hurt.”
“No one is saying anything about hurting anyone, Lily,” Ant said. “We’re all just upset and thinking out loud. Don’t worry about that. Let’s just cover all of our bases, and go from there. Kelvin, did the police question you at the restaurant?”
Kelvin led me over to the table and pulled out a chair for me to sit down. After I took my seat, he sat in the chair next to me, followed by his four uncles, and a friend of the family, Thomas Black who seemed intent on staying quiet.
“The cops asked me a few questions about what I saw, and about who I thought was responsible,” Kelvin responded.
“And what did you tell them?” Clarence jumped in. His tone was almost accusatory and I could tell that Kelvin didn’t like it.
“What do you think I told them?” Kelvin snipped as he glared at his uncle. I wasn’t used to seeing him so short tempered.
“I assume you told them you didn’t know anything,” Clarence responded, eyeballing Kelvin with his usual scowl.
“No shit.” Kelvin dismissed the uncle who was apparently getting on his nerves and turned his attention back to Ant. “The police aren’t gonna be a problem. They don’t have anything to work with. So, where does that leave us, Uncle Ant? Where do we go from here?”
Ant ran his hand across his bald head and exhaled as he adjusted his glasses. “Well, the first thing we need to do is make sure that you’re protected. I think we should start by having you stay here in the Royal Flush for a while.”
Kelvin scrunched his forehead. “You want me to stay here? Why, because this is my dad’s casino? You think I’m invincible here? And if I stay here, then what are we doing about Lilliana? How do we protect her?”
Clarence put his hand in the air as if telling Kelvin to stop. “Now hold on, Junior. We’re trying to make sure that you are protected. We have to look out for The Family.”
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean? You’ll try to keep me safe, but she’s on her own? They tried to kill us both tonight.”
“I completely understand your concern, Junior, but this is about what we can do to protect The Family. We already lost Fab and we’re not trying to have a repeat of that,” Michael said from the head of the table.
“As much as I appreciate your concern for my safety, you have to understand my concern for hers. If something happens to Lilliana, it’d be worse than if it
