was in the area. And he’d been having repairs done on the house in return. “He said that he’d take care of the taxes for me, but I said I just felt better with him living there. Sort of a safety net should I need it in the event the place is robbed. I’ll have a lot of drugs in the place when I’m done moving in. Oh yeah, that reminds me, I have to talk to an attorney about something. I got this letter in the mail about something to do with drugs on the premises. Did you ever hear of a vault for drugs in a business like mine? Huge sucker, too, if I’m reading this right.”
“No. I mean, I guess that makes sense, but it’s not like you’re going to be selling them, right? We’re talking just things like samples and such.” Ennis said that was it, but he had to get one. “I’d check into it like you are. Probably just a precautionary letter they send to all doctors.”
After his brother left, Aedan went to check up on his new guest and wasn’t surprised to find him resting comfortably. Getting ready to go into the office himself, Aedan thought about all the things that could go wrong with this. First and foremost, he could be out of the running for a job that he’d come to want very badly.

    Chapter 2

Otis looked around the war room that he’d had set up to find the fucking cop. Maps, notes, and anything else that they could think of were marked on large sheets of paper that had been brought in. Places where they had thought she might be but wasn’t were marked, as well as other places to check. So far, nothing. He wasn’t sure where else they could look. Otis thought for sure she was dead—they’d certainly fired enough bullets into her body—but what they should have done was put one between her eyes and been done with it. Whatever had happened to her body while she laid there was anyone’s guess. She had simply disappeared.
“We’ve been by her grandfather’s place several times since we went by to talk to him, and nothing. No one in any hospital has seen him, no animal doctors, not even any would be doctors have had any suspicious men in to be worked on. I know that he can’t be up and around for long. He took at least two shots from my gun for sure. It’s like the girl. Just gone.” Otis nodded, but said nothing to his man, Joe. “I have a theory, if you want to hear it.”
“I do, but in a minute. Let me tell you what I think, and then we can add to it with your theory. I’m thinking that they’re not together. Whoever took them, and I’m thinking it’s just one person, he would have had to separate them so that we’d not have them where we want them. I’ve also been thinking that perhaps she might not be dead. You said yourself that there wasn’t enough blood left behind for her to be over the fucking rainbow. So, like the grandfather, she’s getting medical care somewhere. But where?”
“She had to have a vest on. It’s the only thing that fits.” That was what Otis thought now too. Christ, the woman acted like everyone was out to get her. “Oh, and we can’t find her phone. I’m pretty sure you were right in saying that she was flashing pictures of all of us. That alone will get us all in deep shit. I’m almost afraid to think who might have that now.”
“You’ve not said anything to anyone about that, have you?” He said that he hadn’t and wouldn’t. “Good. What is it you think happened to her? And the other Neal?”
“Vamp.” Otis turned and looked at him. His fear of those monsters was known to everyone who ever heard his name. Otis Adkins was terrified of vampires. Any shifters really, but it was the vamps and their long sharp teeth that had his bladder tightening up. “Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. Just why not kill us all while he was there? But he had to get this woman to some doc somewhere. Right? He might have even given her a little of himself to keep her alive until the phone appears. After that comes to light, then he can do
