would be on the HoloNet for
weeks
. Anyone thinking of switching sides would have to think twice, and any collaborators would be shaking in their boots.â
âNot only that,â Jacen said, âbut a team could be landed in Peace City to become our permanent intelligence presence in the enemy capital, and perhaps to organize the underground there.â
Kreâfeyâs long head turned from Jacen to Kyp and back again. He tugged at his white-furred chin in thought. âThis requires a more elaborate missionâperhaps you do not realize
how
much more elaborate. With the original plan thereâs very little that can go wrong. We transit to the system, engage, win our victory, and leave. If the enemy are too strong, we run without a fight. But with Jacenâs idea weâd need transports, drop ships, ground forces. If things go wrong on the ground, weâll take a lot of casualties just getting our people away. If things go wrong above the planet, the forces on the ground may be stranded there.â
âSir,â Jaina said, âI volunteer to lead the ground forces.â
The Sword of the Jedi,
Jacen thought,
thrusting straight to the heart.
Kyp turned to Jaina, his voice hesitant. âI, uhââ For once in his life Jacen was privileged to watch Kyp Durron embarrassed. âI really donât think that would be a good idea, Sticks.â
Jainaâs eyes flashed, but her voice was very controlled. âYou donât have to be so protective of me, Master Durron,â she said.
Surprise rose in Jacen. He sensed history here, something between Jaina and Kyp that he hadnât known existed.
Now
thatâs
interesting
.
âAh, thatâs not it,â Kyp said hastily. âItâs just thatââ He looked at his datapad. âThe latest news from Ylesia indicates that you have a personal relationship with, ah, one of our potential captives.â And, as Jainaâs indignation increased, Kyp turned to Jacen as his embarrassment deepened. âAnd Jacen, too, of course.â
âJacen, too?â
Jaina demanded, outraged.
Kyp looked at the datapad again and shrugged. âThe Peace Brigade just announced their new President. Heâs, ah, your cousin Thrackan.â
Confusion swept Jainaâs face. âThat doesnât make any sense,â Jacen said immediately.
âSorry,â Kyp said, âI know heâs a member of your family, butââ
âNo,â Jacen said, âthatâs not it. Iâm not going to defend Thrackan Sal-Solo because heâs a distant
cousin
ââ
âA cousin whoâs vicious as a slashrat and slippery as an Umgullian blob,â Jaina added.
Jacen took a breath and continued, intent on making his point. âI was only going to point out,â he said, âthat it doesnât make any sense because Thrackan is a human chauvinist. Heâs always wanted to run Corellia so he could throw the other species
out
. Heâd never make a deal if that meant heâd have to collaborate with an alien species.â
Kyp looked dubious. âI suppose the story could be false,â he said, âbut itâs all over the HoloNet, complete with pictures of your cousin taking his oath of office in front of the Peace Brigade Senate.â
Jacen saw Jainaâs face harden. âRight,â she said, ânow Iâve
got
to be with the ground party.â
âMe, too, I guess,â Jacen said. âItâll be . . . enlightening . . . to see cousin Thrackan again.â
Traest Kreâfey looked from Jaina to Jacen and back again.
âI must say,â he said, âthat the two of you belong to the most
interesting
family.â
Admiral Kreâfey continued his show of reluctance, but eventually he set his staff to âexploringâ the possibility of a landing to capture the Peace Brigade leadership. By the time Jaina entered the shuttle that would
